. >> bob redell in the thick of the fog this morning. pretty soupy conditions might be the word of the day, bob. >> well, it is patchy fog, good morning to you, laura. northbound 101 approaching moffett field there on the right where the red lights are and we're starting to see some of the fog come in. we were just in san jose where it was bad. i can tell you coming in this morning from the east bay you see it on the sunol grade which given the fact that it is a valley and once we get further north along 101 especially past the dumbarton bridge you'll see foggy conditions that could affect your drive into work. you want to remember, obviously, slow down and if you are driving in fog, do not use your bright headlights because that will create a white wall which flashes back in your eyes and makes it very difficult to use you want to use your fog lights if you have them, or your regular lights and watch the driving distance between you and the car in front of you. fairly good driving conditions right now. we got probably a quarter mile visi

. >> bob redell just arrived. what can you tell us, bob. it looks huge. >> laura and sam, within the past 30 minutes the oakland fire department was able to extinguish that fire and the temple which is basically a home here that was converted into a temple. if you look to the right, you can see one of the other homes extended to. it severely damaged that home and then what you can't see is the home in the back that also offered serious damage. a fire call came in around 1:50 and it it was a second alarm and when they arrived on the scene and saw how serious it was and how much it it was extending to the two other homes they decided to call for a third alarm. the fire destroyed a temple and severely damaged two homes and also destroyed five cars and three sheds. now, there were 11 people in the temple at the time and, according to one of the monks who's a member of the temple and according to the fire department neighbors what we've been able to gather they were in the process of some sort of celebration or preparing food for a celebration w

bob redell has more on the second bay area visit. bob? >> sam and laura, we're expecting the cma benjamin franklin to arrive around 7:00 and it is 6:20 and there he or she, whatever gender he is or she is is cruising right now underneath the bay bridge. you can get a sense just looking at that ship just how large it is. it is one of the largest container ships of its kind in the world. it can hold 18,000, 20-foot long containers. just to give you some perspective the ship that comes in here that you see going underneath the bay bridge into the port of oakland. those ships usually only contain or hold or carry 8,000 containers. that gives you a sense of how much bigger it is. 177 feet wide, 20 stories high, 1,310 feet long. obviously, that's taller than the empire state building. >> this came around the corner i honestly got chills. i worked in the shipping industry for ten years. and never seen anything like it. it's massive. it's beautiful. there have been pictures of it, videos coming under the golden gate bridge. it is immediately an i

bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> 6:02. happening today. the hayward police apartment will release more information surrounding the killing of a young mother from san jose. police announced they found the body of 2-year-old stacey aguilar. as of now they're only saying her death is a homicide. aguilar's family first reported her missing last monday. she was last seen leaving a party with her boyfriend in hayward. at the hayward police deit apartment morning getting information right now. she will join us for the live report in about 20 minutes. >>> in the meantime a break in the case and a deadly stabbing at a bar might be solved. they have a man in custody. police say anthony tafoya stabbed two men early saturday morning. one of the victims died and the other was hurt but will survive. it all happened outside of the elegant pub in the evergreen section of san jose. it is still annive investigation. police right now say they're still looking for a motive and they're asking anyone with information to please come forward. >>> it it is 6:03. w

"today in the bay" bob redell is out in the thick of things. we'll check in with him in ten minutes. >> first, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. how much longer can we expected the rain? >> off and on for the next three or four hours and you're not going to see it at all. tracking the cell moving through san francisco and picking up on some intense lightning here as it continues to move on through. so, as it moves through the sunset district, we've seen the bright red intensities also moving across the embarcadero and also approaching the financial district. we've had many reports on twitter of people just saying, i'm seeing the lightning now and that rain is really pouring. we will see that off and on throughout the morning. once again, very hit or miss as it moves through the north bay. by 10:00, maybe approaching the east and we'll be, once again, very spotty. but at times very heavy and all moving out of here later on this evening. as we go into the next couple of days, maybe a few more chances of rain. i'll detail that coming up

we have bob redell on the mean streets of somewhere in the peninsula. where are you tracking the fog this morning, bob. >> we're in foster city eastbound on highway 92 about to hit the incline of the san mateo bridge. last time you checked in with us, we were in the south bay where there wasn't much fog but you started to see it once you move your way up highway 101 into the peninsula. i would say mountain view is when you start to see it. fortunately, what we're seeing right now, this is about the worst we've seen. so, you can still see the cars in front of you, which is, obviously, a good thing if you're driving into work today. but that's not to say it is going to get thicker in some areas. remember, if you are in those areas where that fog is thick, you do not want to use your bright lights to see the car in front of you. that will cause a white wall of blindness for yourself and watch the speed and distance and as you can see the orange lights indicating the incline of the san mateo bridge. we are starting to see some fog here. something to keep in

"today in the bay," bob redell, joining us live. bob, we spoke with the man who owns the car and he told us what he knows. good morning. >> reporter: we have spoken to san jose police who tell us they are still looking for a suspect in the shooting that took place just over 24 hours ago. this happened in the alleyway in the valley. it was around 3:45 yesterday morning. someone shot and killed the driver of that black, 1993 oldsmobile. you can see the driver's side window was shot out. the car ended up crashing into a pole. as you mentioned, we did speak with the owner of that car. he didn't want to be identified. he tells us he believes this was a random act of violence. >> my son uses my car. my son got home from work. his roommate went out to park the car for him. rolled up back here to find a parking space. somebody shot him. >> his roommate. >> someone shot his roommate. >> nobody was chasing him t was just somebody was out looking to do some damage. >> another person tells nbc area they saw four people in dark clothing roaming

"today in the bay" bob redell joining us live with much more. bob, the sis a process that could take hours, if not more to complete. >> correct, sam. yes, as you mentioned. this is phase two of demolition of the old bay bridge and starting as soon as today, we could be seeing the removal of a 500 foot four-foot long truss. if you're not familiar a truss is that section of bridge and road and steel that connects between two towers. now, workers will start lowering that truss where we're at right now. lower it on to a barge in the water below. cal trans has installed pieces of equipment on either side of the truss and used to lower that large section of steel and it lowers at a rate of about 25 feet an hour. it would be expected to take six hours, roughly. a barge would then take the truss to pier seven where it it will be disassembled and the steel recycled. a total of 19 trusses on the old bay bridge that need to be removed. you got five, 400-foot long sections and the remaining are around 288 feet long. it will take several months for all this t

bob redell is live in oakland. bob, the big concern is falling concrete as we've seen in weeks past. >> reporter: correct. caltrans just confirmed to us within the past 30 minutes that its agency did find 13 more problem spots on both sides of the walls in the yerba buena tunnel. these are concrete spots that indicated corrosion and needed to be replaced. now, this comes after a large 13 x 12 inch chunk of concrete fell from the wall and hit liz g gusten's car. the collision popped her tire and caused more than $3,000 worth of damage to her car. february 1st, caltran workers tapped the walls of the tunnel with a hammer to see if any more spots rang hollow. workers found 13 locations i mentioned that had been loosened from the rebar by moisture and rainwater and they range in size from a few inches to a few feet. all of those pieces have been removed. tomorrow caltrans will meet with the federal highway administration to seek additional expertise. caltrans wants to make sure this problem isn't more extensive, and if
