bob redell is live at hayward police department with more details. we know several people were arrested and anybody still at large that we should know about? >> right now, not according to police. they do believe, they do have four people in custody, kris and sam. they arrested four people, including two young women after a possible home invasion taking place at the plaza verde apartments. this an apartment complex at 550 berry avenue. police tell us they are investigating a break-in into one of the units there that happened some time before midnight. not clear if anyone inside the unit was hurt. but we do know the suspects escaped and ended up crashing their get away vehicle, a sedan, just a couple of blocks away. it's not clear if this crash happened because of poor driving or if they were being chased by police. the video does show a man from the car being handcuffed. being wheeled away into an ambulance. police have taken four people from that car into custody, two females. young adults, possibly teenagers. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'l

"today in the bay's" bob redell joining us live in burlingame. a tragedy, bob. what can we learn from this? good morning. >> reporter: good morning. people who know the tremel family have been leaving flowers on the doorstep of their door here in burlingame out of sympathy for jim tremel, a 43-year-old tech exec who was electrocuted easter sunday in the pool at the family's vacation home in palm springs. he jumped in the pool to save his 9-year-old daughter, who was experiencing electrical shocks and turning blue. she was taken to the hospital, last report was in critical condition. tremel, unfortunately, didn't survive the electrical current. law enforcement in palm springs believes faulty wiring, possibly to the pool light, might be to blame. tremel was a former exec at facebook and most recently the bp of sales for revjet in san carlos. >> he was always really nice, good to the kids. you could always see him jumping on the trampoline back here and yelling to my dog. especially to hear about the oldest daughter. i hope she's going to pull through and be okay.

bob redell joining us live from morago. the sinkhole the major issue as they restore more and more gas to those customers. >> correct, sam and laura. you can see the sinkhole behind me at the intersection of center in moraga. the estimate for repairing that sinkhole is going to be about a week. as you can see the workers are taking a break since it is the overnight hours. the priority has been restoring gas and electric service. pg&e just updated us just a handful of customers without electricity and they have them back on with a generator and 2,500 customers without gas. mostly residential. 2,000 of the customers had their gas restored. these are the latest number from last night. the utility had 200 workers going door to door making sure the lines were properly turned back on and tarelight the pilot lights. now, still about 500 customers without gas. pg&e did leave red tags on the doors of those that weren't home and with a number to call. 100 workers going back out to those neighborhoods to try to turn the gas back on fo

. >> bob redell has details on this deadly pain killer and how people are getting their hands on it. bob, this is a powerful narcotic that is prescription, right? >> it is. good morning to you, kris and sam. we have reached out to the santa clara county public health department to see if this powerful drug has yet to hit the streets here in the south bay. what we are talk about are pills made from a synthetic pain killer. a prescription drug considered to be eight times more powerful than heroin. caused 28 people to overdose and killed seven. the most recent is jerome butler, the 28-year-old man thought his friend was giving him a dose of norcoa less powerful pain killer. didn't realize it was fentanyl and butler became unresponsive saturday and his family just made the heartbreaking decision to take him off life support leaving his son without a father. >> and i'm just a young boy. i don't think i'm supposed to be going through this right now. >> people one pill. one pill. we have to find out where it's coming from. >> the drug enforcement agency says fentanyl is produced mainly in c

pg&e trying to fix the problem. >>> i'm bob redell live in pacifica. you can see the apartment complex that used to be behind me coming down to prevent it from tumbling into the pacific ocean. demolition began on saturday. the workers were taremove about three quarters of the 20-unit apartment complex and take it to the landfill. the work should be done mid-week and possibly today. depends on the weather. the city declared this apartment complex unsafe and forced its residents to move out back in 2010 because the ocean eroded so much of the cliff it was standing on. it was so severe parts of the complex was teetering on the edge. the structure was supposed to come down a long time ago but didn't because of a dispute with the property owner that wouldn't pay for the demolition. the apartment complex next door was torn down last month. thisser the city hopes to find a way to better stabilize the cliff to protect the utilities to make sure this doesn't fall in, as well. reporting live in pacifica, bob redell. >> that was ocean front property. >> yeah. at

. >> bob redell is in alameda. bob, smugglers getting more sophisticated about not getting caught. >> reporter: they're trying to at least. good morning to you, scott and kris. the smugglers were transporting the cocaine in a submarine-like craft, something that the drug cartels have been using a number of years now, but it's not often that we get to see them in action and that's what i'm talking about right now with this video. the coast guard station in alameda just released this video of this bust that took place march 3rd. this was 300 miles northwest of panama. that is called a self-propelled semi submersible. if you look underneath the water surface, you would see that it goes much deeper than it would appear. inside was a four-man crew and 12,500 pounds of cocaine. the coast guard cutter was notified that was based here out of alameda. the coast guard crew arrested the smugglers. they were able to get the drugs safely off the craft. the value of those drugs on the street is around $200 million. the crew sank

bob redell is joining us live from pacifica. bob, i think it was about 25% left going in today. how's the progress coming? >> reporter: well, sam and laura, the 20-unit apartment complex that used to stand here overlooking the pacific ocean you can see is no more. demolition crew working on behalf of the city started taking down the structure on saturday. the workers hope to have this plot of land leveled and cleared by tomorrow or wednesday, depending on the weather. you might recall the city red tagged and evacuated this apartment complex back in 2010 as the cliff began to erode and part of the apartment complex teetered on the edge. this property was supposed to come down much sooner but its owner declared bankruptcy and hasn't been able to pay the roughly $200,000 in demolition costs, which the cityopes to some day recoup on behalf of taxpayers. so the demolition crew will take out the rest of the wood structure, the walls and that sort of thing and leave the foundation in place to help stabilize this until the city can find a permanent solution. >> we've been in talks with

bob redell is live in the neighborhood. bob, are people out of their homes this afternoon? >> reporter: kris and scott, we know of at least two families who have moved into hotels, including the chens who live in this home right here behind me. it was their home that flooded again with raw sewage overnight because of a clogged sewer line. you can see right now the city is trying to fix. >> how. hell can we flood twice? i was like -- i think -- i think -- i don't think it can get any worse. >> reporter: that's a very frustrated jason chen showing us the cleanup a restoration had to do in his house for a second time this week after feces and other debris started pouring from his toilet overnight. he and at least one other homeowner are point their fingers at a company called sewer rat for this problem. that contractor has been replacing a sewer pipe connection for one of chen's neighbors. the city suspects during this job workers for that company allegedly left part of the sewer line improperly sealed. this weekend's rains were able to push base rocks into the sewer main. as

. >> bob redell has been covering this story all morning long. he's in hayward. bob, somebody told you there may have been a kidnapping involved as well? >> reporter: correct, scott and kris. hayward police are looking into the possibility that these suspects kidnapped a man at the intersection of harder and franklin and then forced him to take them to an apartment complex so they could rob one of his friends or associates. now, this happened around 11:00 last night, this home invasion robbery at the plaza verde apartments on berry avenue here in hayward. three men entered one of the units, they pistol whipped two men inside, did not hurt the woman who was with them. they stole some valuables and escaped, leaving behind the man they had picked up at the intersection. police started giving chase. the driver of the getaway sedan lost control, correctwrecked a of blocks away from the police station. the three men inside the car took off but police eventually caught two of them. officers also took into custody two young adult women who had also been inside the car. no

bob redell is live at the scene. the car was stolen, say police? >> reporter: law enforcement, kris and scott, believes that the black sedan was stolen from the ford dealership in livermore. the driver of that stolen vehicle was driving through this neighborhood on meadowview drive in castro valley when he hit a young boy, 6 years old, on his way to marshall elementary. he hit him right there against that utility pole pinning his left leg up against that utility pole. >> information suggests he stopped on his way to school to bend down and look at some worms. so he was bending down at the same time that this car lost control. >> reporter: the boy is in the hospital. he is expected to survive, but the sheriff's office believes he might lose his left leg. chp tells us they do have one witness who got a pretty good look at the suspect. they say after the driver collided with the boy, the suspect got out of the car and ran away, ran towards castro valley boulevard. the only description so far, the suspect is white and bald. chp plans to put out a more

. >> bob redell is live at that store in burlingame. we're getting a good look at that suspect. >> reporter: well, scott and kris, investigators might get even a better look at the suspects. burlingame police just informed us that their counterparts in hayward have detained at least two men in a hotel over there across the bay with, quote, a ton of pills in their possession. burlingame detectives are en route to confirm whether these are the same men who stole highly addictive and dangerous drugs from a local walgreens here in burlingame. i want to show you some surveillance images. this is one of the suspects inside the walgreens on el camino real here in burlingame just before 1:00 a.m. tuesday morning. two men entered the store, one jumped the pharmacy counter and pulled a knife. the tech stayed on the ground while the armed robber pillaged the pharmacy for xanax and hydrocodone and stole a combined total of around 3200 pills. >> i believe it's a schedule 3 or 4 narcotic. it's very serious. it has properties as far as their effects s

reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> difficult story for a lot of parent. >>> an update to a breaking news story we covered all morning long. streets are open in livermore after an officer-involved shooting. police say it started early this morning when they got reports of a suicidal man with a gun. around 3:00 in the morning, officers approached the back parking lot of a police station and that's where they say they noticed that man just outside the department's back gate. police say that's when officers say they saw he was armed with a shotgun. when officers retreated, the man fired the shotgun, causing damage to the back window of his car. one officer returned fire, fearing for his life. and after trying to call out the man and getting no response, officers found the men dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. no officer were hurt and the man has not been identified. >> a high speed chase ends with a hollywood-like car crash. a black bmw flew off an east bay highway. >> and landed hundreds of feet away, upside down, lodged into a walnut creek office building
