nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live outside the superior court in oakland. >> reporter: court back in session after a 15-minute recess this morning. the prosecution began their opening statements in dramatic fashion. the prosecutor showing the jury one by one the pictures of the 36 men and women who were killed in this fire. he read their names aloud and labeled them counts 1 through 36, counts of involuntary manslaughter. those are the charges that derrick almena and max harris face for their alleged role in this fire, the so-called ghost ship warehouse that burned here in oakland 2 1/2 years ago, trapping and killing a number of people who had been there for a dance party. this morning the prosecution said the victims had no notice, no time, no exit. he accused almena, who was a tenant, of violating his lease and illegally converting the warehouse into an unsafe residential art space. the jury saw pictures of the ghost ship before the fire, packed with tens of pianos, pieces of furniture and a number of items. the prosecution painted almena as unwilling to spenld the money to add

bob redell outside headquarters of fremont unified school district. bob, teachers plan to rally? >> reporter: right, laura. about 1,000 teachers from free mont, albany, alameda, dublin, san leandro plan to travel to sacramento to rally on the states of the state capitol to pressure lawmakers to spend more money on your students. according to the national education association, nea, california spends about $10,400 per pupil. that is $1,500 less than the national average. teachers say it's not enough, especially when they dig into or own pockets and spend hundreds of dollars on classroom supplies. the east bako litigation blames proposition 13 for lack of funds. that's the 40-year-old voter-approved measure that limits the amount of taxes taken on levy on properties. they want to lifted on large industrial land owners. the california teachers association has endorsed a ballot measure in 2020 that would do just that if voters passed the so-called community funding act. it is estimated school statewide would receive an additional $11 billion a year. reporting live here in fremont, bo

"today in the bay" bob redell joining us live. bob, what can you tell us about the jury? >> reporter: well, marcus, the jury was seated yesterday. tony serra is the lawyer who represents derrick almena. he calls it a rainbow jury because it is so diverse. nine women, three men ranging in ages from their 20s, into their 60s. a mix of blue and white collar workers. serra thinks that will benefit his client. he expects the trial to last two to three months. he expects almena to take the stand in june. they each face 30 koupbs of involuntary manslaughter. the fire trapped and killed a number of people there for a dance party. prosecutors said almena rented the warehouse and illegally turned it into a living space for artists and entertainment venue. the defense lawyers argue that the landlord and city of oakland officials are to blame for failing to ensure the building met safety codes. last year both men agreed to plea no contest. they would have served nine years for almena, harris six. both men now face a max numb sentence of life in prison if convicted on all 36 counts. a

nbc bay area's bob redell stuck in the traffic backup that's happening there. bob, we're get something reports there of explosions? >> reporter: that backup extends from the bridge a good mile or two north to spencer avenue where a goodwill truck went over an embankment around 8:00 or 8:30 and as you can see in this video posted to twitter caught fire. the driver of the big rig was able to escape his cab unharmed. he grabbed a fire extinguisher but was not able to put out that fire as you can see. the cab burned up. the rest of the truck is fine as far as it was burnt up but it's damaged from the crash. and the driver's okay. chp tells me they believe the driver was speeding when he lost control on these wet roads a little bit after 8:30 this morning. all northbound lanes of 101 were shut down at one point at spencer avenue but now the number one lane, that's the far left lane, is open. the traffic is a crawl. the estimated time of getting that big rig back upright and out of the way and that whole scene cleared is another let's say half hour to 90 minutes. we'r
