"today in the bay's" kris sanchez has more what we need to know about all of this. kris? >> reporte marcus and laura, of course, the whole reason for the power outages is to prevent any wildfire from sparking because of the pg&e equipment. so we had to ask pg&e about the kinkade fire that's now burning in sonoma county. they say it is near one of their public service power shutoff areas, those outage areas, but it is unknown at this point whether or not their power lines could have been a factor. we know they lost power at 3:00 yesterday afternoon. now this is the pg&e power map where people are in that public safety power shutoff area. pg&e warned 179,000 customers in 17 counties that they would be in the dark. for

bob redell is live in the hills above dublin. and bob, how are the air quality out there for you? >> reporter: well, actually the air quality, if you take a look out here, you have views as far as the eye can see over to tri--valley, marcus. but this is a spare the air day and the reason is there are concerns that the winds could be pushing the smoke and haze over this part of the bay area, this part of the east bay later today. and spare the air day. the map on your tv screen shows us the air quality within the past hour throughout the bay area. green circles on the map are good. those indicate the air quality index of 0 to 50. notice in san francisco there are some orange which means the air quality is approaching 100. in city as long the east shore freeway, air quality is well over 100. and that is close to where west contra costa county unified is where they are letting kids out at noon. they have bad air up there. benecia in the 300s. vallejo in the 400s. which is similar to the horrible air quality we experienced during last year's campfire in chico. the bay area air quality

our own bob redell is reporting live for us this morning from soda rock winery in healdsburg. bob, we've seen you in the last hour and half. you were in the pitch black. we saw flames higher than your head and now as the sun begins to rise, utter devastation, but be you y told us this is a 150-year-old historic winery. >> reporter: establishing in 1869. at this point right now, soda rock winery doesn't have much left to burn. all you had was an old white house. now all you have left is a foundation. a couple of hours ago this house wastanding here and we watched the embers fly from the other fire and start to catch this on fire. sadly it went up in flames. here's the main winery over here, what's left of it. you see some of it's still burning. as you move to the left, you have this large stone facade. that's all that remains of the main building. let's walk down here. if you've been up here before, you may recognize it because of the stone facade. you can see everything is gone. there's also this rusted metal sculpture of a wart hogg. that's another landmark. i'm pointing that

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live. what kind of measures are we talking about?> reporter: we're talking about the amc movie theater chain has a location b. they've banned masksce the screening of another batman-related film during which there was a match in aurora, colorado, several years ago. amc is reaffirming that ban, reminding customers it's okay to wear costumes but no face paint, no masks, nothing that conceals the face. another theater chain, the landmark, which has locations here in the bay area, has just announced it will be banning masks as well as costumes. the u.s. army has warned of a, quote, potential threat, first in an internal email. they say they are not aware of a specific credibl police are making their presence known. we know law enforcement in chicago plan to do the same. inpif what the army put out, no specific threat, only concern. movie theater during the screening of "the dark knight rises." 12 people were killed, many more injured. now the director of "the joker" is asking people not to prejudge his film saying it's about, quoting her

. >> bob redell is in the evacuated town of geyserville. bob, you've been there. you've seen what's happen iing throughout the day. what's going on now? >> reporter: marcus and laura, cal fire was able to save a number of structures. unfortunately there were a few they were not able to save. there are one of five properties that burned down. i believe this used to be a house. you can see this was the bedroom. further in the back was where the stove, the kitchen was. laundry room was in the back. parts of it are still burning. you see that spit of flame coming out. i believe that's from a propane tank. firefighters are letting that seep out. there doesn't appear to be a risk of explosion. they're just going to let it burn off. this was on geyser road right by red winery road. this is a very rural area. if you were to take a left down that road, you would find three or -- excuse me, four other properties that have different structures on it that burned down. a lot of the fire was concentrated in this area. right now we're seeing that the fire is suppressed behind us

. >> bob redell is live atop the mountain where the winds will start whipping in just hours. bob, the higher elevations are the biggest concerns today and into the night and that includes the foothills. >> reporter: and those winds are already picking up out here. you could see why the fire departments and the forecasters for weather are so concerned. it is very windy out here. we've seen gusts i'm going to guess like it felt like in the 40 to 45-mile-per-hour range. again keep in mind we're at one of the tallest peaks in the bay area, at over 3,800 feet atop mt. diablo but this is where the red flag warning will go into effect in four hours from now and lasting until tomorrow afternoon because of the high winds in the upper elevation and low humidity and as kari talked about the warmer temperatures. one areas that firefighters and forecasters are concerned about is east of where i'm standing. we're in co co county. and the gusts are forecasting are between 30 and 40 miles per hour. but again, we're already feeling that because we're at upper elevation. you recall a couple of

"today in the bay" bob redell live in martinez. and, bob, what do people know as they head out of the door this morning? >> reporter: well it is a spare the air alert day again, marcus. but recall we had one the end of the last weekend. you have one today. you could smell the smoke here in martinez you know there is something burning somewhere but we're talking about the fires in the north bay. take a look at map we put together. a series of different colored circles on there. normally you want the air quality to be green. that indicates the air quality index is from zero to 50. that is good. but right now red circles, reading well over 100 and in some places 200 and last year's campfire at chico that sent our air quality soaring into the 400s. we're not there yet and hopefully won't be there but the air quality is not good now. the bay air quality air district has believed that the winds will shift later today and send more smoke our way instead of out over the pacific ocean. this is a reminder to the elderly and children and anyon

back to could be said around te caldecott tunnel when bob redell was at the news conference that happened there a short time ago. it was interesting for him to note this is a new normal for california. they've ordered back-up generators to come in the spring? >> reporter: and right now caltrans is taking us on to the property above the tunnel. if you look to your left, you won't be able to see through the trees. there are four generators they've brought in welcome back the past 24 hours, three they will have online to provide three megawatts of power and the fourth is a back-up and they have connected it to the power system at the caldecott and right now they have to run a test and they're somewhere in the process of doing that test and they want to get it done before noon when the power is shut off. so caltrans, they have district four director out here and he was very competent that the generators will work and the power will be on in the caldecott and no disruption back and forth. now you wonder why not any power in the tunnel. there are five systems that must be operating in order for

bob redell is in downtown geyserville. you say you've seen a lot of people? we saw in your last report people were driving past the area trying to get to safer ground. >> reporter: this is a very rural area as you were pointing out. we saw a couple people trailering out their animals, their horses. we're on 128 in front of the old oriental community center. this is an intersection in geyserville where the county has been putting up roads closed signs. you see this red flag right here. it has been extremely gusty out here. as we've been talking about, the air is very warm, very windy. these are not good conditions clearly for the firefight. over here as you can see in the background there that is a trailer with a very large dozer and a cal fire crew there. i talked to them briefly, what's the plan? right now they said we're staging and we're just waiting for our orders to be sent to wherever they have to cut lines to form lines of protection around this fire. here's video from earlier as people were leaving the areas impacted by the kinkade fire which, again,

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in the orinda b.a.r.t.re some riders woke up without power, and others are bracing for the next round. what are they saying around there? >> reporter: we moved to the downtown part of orinda, you can see power is still out here. it's up in the air whether the power will come back on and then go off before tonight. in the north bay, power is supposed to shut off in a few hours, talking about between 8:30 and 9:00 this morning. on the peninsula, the south bay, the east bay, places like here in orinda, power could go off tonight, perhaps early tomorrow morning. as you can see in this map provided by pg&e, every county in the bay area except san francisco will be impacted. we're talking about over 60,000 customers or about 1.8 million people in 29 counties statewide who could lose electricity in what would be the third preemptive power shutdown by pg&e in less than a month. pg&e is predicting a weaker wind event this time around but they're being precautious because the fuels are so dry and because the kincade

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside the dublin b.a.r.t. station with more talk on this new crossing. bob? >>> robert powers is making comments in a recent interview with the bay area news group, look at this map we put together to get a better sense of what he is referring to, b.a.r.t. currently crosses between oakland and sf via the trans bay tube that's indicated by that red line there on the map. transportation leaders are considering a second crossing a bridge south of the tube indicated by that yellow stripe. that second trans bay rail crossing would possibly be shared by caltrain, ace, high speed rail and/or the capitol corridor, onner that own set of tracks parallel to b.a.r.t., since b.a.r.t. trains run on a wider gauge. to pay for this and broader improvements for bay area transportation organizations like the silicon valley leadership group and the bay area council are trying to put together a ballot measure possibly for november of next year, that will raise $100 billion in taxes over the next several decades, something b.a.r.t.'

bob redell joins us live in walnut creek this morning with some perspective there. bob? >> reporter: laura, that's cause there is still a risk of fire danger here in the east bay and pretty much anywhere in the bay area, that's why firefighters are reminding you to at least have 30 feet of defensible space around your home especially if you live in a wildland area like this neighborhood located in walnut creek. the national weather service has issued a red flag warning for contra costa county, where we're at and every other county here in the bay area, except for san francisco. it starts again this afternoon, runs until tomorrow afternoon. the highest threat of wildfire according to nws will be in eastern coco county. because of warm temps, low humidities, and expected strong winds from the central valley. the city of berkeley is so concerned about this year's fire season, last week the city council passed a resolution to make fire safety a top priority, and you can understand why. many homes there and other parts of the east bay hills are built close together on steep t

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is outside walnut creek b.a.r.t. this morning.about why this move is so significant. >> reporter: laura and marcus, where we were mention earlier the walnut creek transit village is a big deal for a couple of reasons. one, this has been several years in the planning in the making and two, taking place behind me will represent the coming online of hundreds of new apartments. it's taking place in the parcel of land behind the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. we put this map on your tv screen so you can get a better lay of the land. the apartments should be located just north of the walnut creek b.a.r.t. train station in what used to be a parking lot for b.a.r.t. riders. here is some rendering from the developer. this will give you a sense of what the development looks like. when complete the walnut creek transit village will cover 16 acres, will have almost 600 apartments and 26,000 feet of retail space. the developer says it will be one of the largest transit developments of its kind in the bay area. construction will take place in t

let's check in with bob redell. he is on the fire lines just above sanders ranch road. what do you know, bob? >> reporter: you can see i just asked the firefighters behind me, is this the frontline of the fire as far as the fire is concerned and they said yes. there's not much left here as far as what is burning. they've been out here and you get a sense how rugged this terrain is. they've been out here spraying down a trunk burning here and of course just trying to establish a perimeter. what we're standing in is on the side of a ridge, a bowl, and this is hard ground. looks like it had a lot of dry grass on it. you have these trees here. we have about a dozen firefighters out here. when you come out and see them out here dealing with the conditions you realize what it takes to be a firefighter. it's very steep. the terrain is not very firm. it's easy to slip and you're wearing all that gear and trying to deal with the smoke there. the official number is this fire is at 60 acres and 60% contained. when i spoke with the moraga fire department they expected the numbers to

now our bob redell is on the frontline of that fire. >> that's right. it looks like firefighters made a lot of progress so far. this broke out about 1:00 this morning. >> reporter: correct. i just spoke with a captain with the moraga fire department on the front lines since this fire started and he said to us the fire is out. we're on the western edge of the fire line. that is sanders ranch. we see the flashing lights where the fire trucks are located. that's where the homes are, about 100 evacuated when the fire started at 1:00 this morning. the captain was telling me how erratic the fire behavior was and how dangerous it was. it was initially about a half acre to an acre. when they arrived it quickly took off. it jumped to 20 acres. they credit stopping the fire they had a lot of resources on the fire. they were staged throughout the area and it goes to show and i was asking about this, the state of readiness firefighters have now begin what happened in paradise two years ago in the north bay. they were prepared for something like this. he told me up

let's check in with nbc bay area's bob redell live out there on the scene. bob?>> reporter: laura and marcus, you can see the sun rise is very muted here in geyserville because of the thick smoke hanging over this small town off 101. the entire community as you've been mentioning is under a mandatory evacuation. we've seen spot fires that have jumped the road. i want you to direct your attention over there. i'm being quiet to listen to what's going on. a large crackling sound. i thought it was miniature explosions. you can see that tree, we're looking northwest to downtown geyserville towards 101. that tree is going up and that's the sound we're hearing. i'm showing so you can see how much the fire has jumped. it jumped 128. it's burning in that direction. you look further to the right you see a line of fire there. as you continue you see the fire continues all the way across the road. and then almost a 180 and get back to this home, this grnhouse, two-story wooden structure that was threatened about 90 minutes ago, two hours ago. you can see the backyard, all yo

we want to bring you the latest, bob redell right now, we've been tracking this for some time, known een coming. people are just trying to adjust, bob. >> reporter: correct. the big issue is for people is b.a.r.t. is up and running and the answer is yes. b.a.r.t. has been preparing for months with pg&e to prepare for the emergency outages so even if the b.a.r.t. station and the tracks are in an area that end up without power, b.a.r.t. is able to keep those tracks electrified by drawing power from other parts of their transit system. so b.a.r.t. sup ais up and runn and stations in the east bay will have portable generators to keep the house power on, talking about things the power for the fare gates, the vending machines, tickets, and the's ska escalators and elevators. there was concern about caldecott tunnel whether or not that was going to be open. it is according to caltrans. they brought in generators to keep the exhaust fans that are in those tunnels, they did bring generators in to get those electrified and trying to do the same for devil's slide on highway 1. if you're concerne

"today in the bay's" bob redell has been on the front lines. fighters got this under control considerably quick. no structures were damaged, bob? >> reporter: correct. about 140 homes threatened, laura. we're down the hill off the fire line at st. monica's where the people were evacuated. many allowed to go back home. it was about 40 acres behind that neighborhood. as you can see it scorched the area. primarily brush, some trees. bulldozers out there a couple hours ago and we presume are still out there cutting lines of containment. 40 acres burned, 70% contained. the fire is out. what they want to do is get lines around 100% of that area burned. this is some video of what the fire looked like when it started shortly before 1:00. you can see why the police department went in there and told people to get out. one thing the fire department did say the people who lived there were very cooperative and credited them for getting out of there in time given the fact at one point this was a very dangerous situation. here is the fire captain who was on th

our reporter bob redell is in he healdsburg at soda ridge winery. devastation of a 150-year-old historic building. just decimated. hi, bob. >> yeah, just added some video and sent it back in to give you a sense of what we saw when we were out here when soda rock winery was burning. i'll start you a frame of reference. this used to be a very large wine barrel with the soda rock name on it. now look at this video. and i'm illustrating this and showing this to you so you can understand the effect the embers had here. this wine barrel was -- had quite a lot of space between it and the main building that was on fire. because of the wind, it took down this wine barrel and it took down every structure here at soda rock, including what looked like an historic house. a white building. the main facility. and a couple of other buildings. the only thing that's still standing here is an why that won't survive because right now everything is kind of died down out here. really isn't much left to burn, sadly. it appears this was a spot fire because the main fire now
