nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live if oakland international. bob, flights delayed as a result now. what's the the aftermath we're seeing? >> reporter: and there's still plenty of residual delays. i was inside the terminal and there's plenty of yellow on the departure screen. this is what it looked like when we arrived this morning. it still looks like that. you can see there's lots of yellow next to the southwest airlines flights, which indicates those delays. most delays for 20 to 30 minutes. we did not see any cancellations. it was around 7:03 this morning when southwest experienced a computer problem and asked the faa to temporaily stop its planes from taking off which took about an hour. a number of passengers tweeted their frustration. according to flightaware.com, more than 1,700 flights were delayed nationwide, which represents more than 40% of southwest's flights for today. today's technical was not related to the one back last year with holiday cancellations and much longer delays than today. >> we'll see when we get to denver what happ

bob redell has what police are revealing this morning. they just wrapped up a news conference. >> reporter: the man shot was blake moez, a 26-year-old resident of the tri-valley, an eagle scout, a young man who was supposed to be married this summer. this woman, benicia knapps shot him and this man next to her, david geshgs uillory drove the getaway car with her 2-year-old bby inside. she was trying to steal an electrical item from the backloading dock of the home depot. the employee alerted the employee. knaps escaped in that getaway car. they tracked the vehicle to oakland, where the couple was arrested. law enforcement reunited that 2-year-old baby with other family members. there are a number of pleasanton police officers who knew mohs. >> he was a great person. he had a zeal for life and thoroughly enjoyed his work. he had an interest in law enforcement. he was involved in youth law enforcement programs. i understand he was an eagle scout. he had some aspiration of being involved in law enforcement, which is undoubtedly why he ended

. >> nbc bay area's bob redell is outside of northgate high school. a tough time for students knowing it happened there on campus. >> reporter: there's some good news this morning. the superintendent for the mount diablo unified school district tells us that the girl, a freshman at northgate high school, in walnut creek, is resting in hospital after a successful surgery to repair that stab wound to her neck. walnut creek police confirm she is in stable condition. this morning as students arrived, the district sent in an additional three counselors to the already four on campus and added a psychologist, social worker, and three therapy dogs to help students and staff cope with what happened the day before. police have arrested a ninth grade boy after he stabbed that female freshman in the neck yesterday. the attack happened near some dumpsters on the backside of the school campus. the boy learned scissors and was tackled by at least one administrator after the attack. it's not clear what led up to the assault. the superintendent says both students are

"today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us live from san ramon. two bay area counties may still require masks in certain medical settings, right? >> reporter: correct. good morning. yeah, starting today here in contra costa county, alameda county, you still must mask up if you work in a skilled nursing facility, but counties are going along with the state guidance to allow doctors and nurses like in the hospitals, like the one behind me, to still go without masks if those facilities choose to. so the health department here in alameda county is still requiring those who work in skilled nursing facilities to mask up as far as hospitals go, it's up to their own discretion. starting today the state is lifting mask requirements at hospitals and other health care facilities. again, this is statewide. however, each institution, city or county can set their own guidelines around the masking. we reached out to several hospitals, asked about their plans. john muir health will only mandate masks for vulnerable patients, kaiser permanente is lifting requireme
