let's get right to bob ryan with a check on the forecast. bob? >> last night we had tornado warnings and severe storms in southern maryland. now there are a few showers and a few thunderstorms trying to get going. but i think today these are not going to amount to severe weather. that will be a different story tomorrow. look at the storms, though, heading towards charlottesville and you folks out into loudoun county and northern parts of maryland andust see something rain. regular showers up around lancaster, pennsylvania, though, there are nasty storms. but we have another storm to keep an eye on especially you folks heading for the beach. look at this dramatic picture. this is from the international space station. this is hurricane bill. this is the way it looks up from the international space station. right now it is a thousand miles southeast of cape hatteras and north carolina and winds are 125 miles an hour. i want to show you another dramatic picture. this is what the eye looks like. this is from 400 miles up. this was the eye as seen from

bob ryan, storm center4. we've got high clouds out there, but alas, nothing on doppler. there you can see it scanning. there's nothing around us. but, boy, has it been continuing to rain from what had been claudette. you can see that tropical moisture coming into the south. look at pensacola. they had over ten inches of rain today. since yesterday, since all of this came ashore, over -- almost 12 inches of rain. we really need a thundershower. we're in a dry, dry pattern in july and august. better chances as we get later into the week. right now, the weekend looks pretty good. starting out with clouds and humidity and ending with a lot of dry sunshine the way it looks right now. >>> a frightening ordeal for a cameraman curving flooding in taiwan. he was trying to cross a swollen creek with his camera in hand. the current got the best of him. he lost his balance and he was swept downstream. fortunately, some locals were able to get to him. gohim back on his feet. the typhoon hit the region last week. 500 people there were killed. >>> a leading environmental group in beiji

bob ryan is upstairs with more. >> it certainly did. the heat index was issued in part because we've had a reasonable summer. the heat advisory, that is. our heat index did get up to a bit above 100 as it is right now. it still feels like it's 98 here in washington. our high temperature for the day did almost make a record. 97 degrees. right now, 94 downtown. even around the bay, annapolis, 94 degrees. it is cooler out to our west. matter of fact, there are showers and thunder showers you can see out in garrett county. i don't think they'll make it in here. tomorrow we might be seeing a different story. the hottest day of the summer so far has been today. 97. there are the other years. we don't want to repeat two years ago when it got to 102 degrees. as a matter of fact, while this afternoon it felt like it was 100, look at the heat and humidity combinations in years past. remember back in 1995? that was a day it felt like 117 degrees. it will be another hot one tomorrow, but after that, not as hot for the remainder of the week. still d

straight to bob ryan in storm center 4 for the latest this. >> we did have some very, very heavy tropical rains right in washington. essentially the watch is down. there was a watcherier. you can see a nasty thunderstorm that's moved through winchester with nickel-sized hail there. it is now movingnto the panhandle of west virginia and those are the areas you folks that are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:30 tonight. let me how is some of the towns and it includes spots like harper's ferry very soon and charlestown, west virginia. as well as lovettsville and parts of loudoun county. those are the areas under the warning now. severe thunderstorm warning for possibly some strong winds but also hail because there has been a report hail. we will keep an eye on that and you can see that the bigger view of things is that these storms will continue to move more towards the north and northwest of washington. more out in the shenandoah valley, too. meanwhile the other concern is bill which will be moving well off the coast. won't be bringing rain and hardly any clouds. real heavy surf
