i think boehner liked his audition for speaker of the house. gwen: well, that's something to look forward to. thanks, eamon. the obama administration got another unwelcome late summer surprise this week when a judge blocked the awarding of federal grants for stem cell research. remember that? it's a decision the justice department says it will challenge. this is not a new debate but this is a new fight, pete. it feels like we've been here before. remind us about it. >> this was a sleeper case and it really stunned the research community because they did not see this coming. so what's at issue here are the type of stem cells that come from human embryos. and since 1996 congress has said you can't use any federal money on any research in which embryos are destroyed. now, since the bush administration, the federal government has always taken the position that well, it supports only research on the stem cells themselves not on the actual gathering of the stem cells so, therefore, there's no violation of the law and what the judge said this week is

you do not want the speaker boehner or chairman barton. once they are in charge, they will herald a return to the bush economic policy. we are seeing both sides of four shot of the future and a worse- case scenario. -- both sides foreshadow the future and the worst case scenario. polls now show that he has a slight lead over sharron angle in nevada, even though, overwhelmingly, when you come to popularity ratings, he is in the low-50%. >> that is the way the campaign was designed. they knew he was not popular. he would never be someone that people love. the only way he can win is to make the opponent -- make the campaign about his opponent. his opponent is scary and worse than him. the third demonizing sharron angle at every turn. -- they are demonizing sharron angle at every turn. the are criticizing her over her contention that it is not the senators job to create jobs. it is a state with the highest unemployment rate today are trying to drive voters away from sharron angle. if you vote for a third-party candidate, great. nevada has what

this is why i think what boehner did was a little dicey. you don't want to get in a washington republican fight versus the president. you want to get in an economic fight versus the president. and the more you bring washington republicans in it, who have lower ratings than the president, it's problematic.

boehner wants to do is extend the tax cut to the remaining 2%. that means going out to have to borrow another $70 billion over the next ten years to give $100,000 tabs tax cuts to someone making $1 million. >> the vice president also said republican leaders have not offered any constructive ideas to help the economy. >>> well, the latest sign of trouble, the biggest drop in existing home sales ever recorded. existing homes, in other words, not new homes, are selling at the lowest rate in 15 years after a 27% decline last month. right now, there are nearly 4 million unsold homes in the u.s. and 12 1/2-month supply. that is the largest in 30 years. at the same time, congress can't decide how to reform money-losing fannie mae and freddie mac, which are responsible for more than half of all mortgages in the u.s. anthony mason has that story. >> fixing this system is one of the most consequential problems and complicated economic policy problems we face as a nation. >> reporter: in florida this month, fannie mae auctioned off nearly 100 foreclosed pro

boehner is, too. the speech this week did not indicate too many thoughts about the future, much more centered i think upon the rather poll rised political situation currently, and i don't excuse anybody necessarily, but i would say many people in the country are hopeful if we do have republican majorities we will also have some republican ideas and programs and be able to articulate those. i'm among those who feel that's important and so we'll continue to work with senator mcconnell, at least in our party, to do that. >> you also mentioned the possibility of mitch daniel putting his hat in the ring for president. i wonder if you've heard from him. >> well, i've had a good conversation with him in indiana just a week or so ago, and he has made no commitment and this will not be the time in which we make an announcement that he will need to make at some point. i have encouraged him to run. i think that he would be an outstanding candidate and a great president. but he will have to make that decision him

boehner rightly said that we needed deficit reduction plan. he sadly wrong -- he said that this runs the risk of causing the damaging spike in interest rates that would cripple job creation. so how is it that in that very same speech, he proposes to do what would be a $680 billion blowout in --: the deficit over the next 10 years? that was send a terrible signal the united states is fiscally reckless, and we've not done our economic house in order. in the longer-term that debt will limit our economic growth. but apparently the republican leader and his colleagues are willing to risk our future economic growth in order to permanently extend that portion of the bush tax cut but does to the wealthiest 2% in our country. the non-partisan tax policy center estimates the 96% of that $680 billion will go to the 923,000 households that make over $500,000 a year. and under that plan, next year households making over $1 million would receive an average tax cut of $103,000. the notion that we need to permanently extend these deficits-busting tax cuts for

[laughter] chris: does that hurt the republican party to have dull leaders? >> there is a front stage-badge stage scenario where they don't necessarily have the strongest voices for television and for easy communication, kind of the b team is moving up who really communicate well. if you look at mitch mcconnell, his strength is organizing the party and the message. that has its value and not as easy. chris: how does that square with the tea party crowd who were excited? maybe it works together? >> there is energy and pragmatism and when they get people excited and have a strategy. chris: then comes the tricky problemyimarr those two. how do you take people with the high numbers like palin and say, we are going to run one of esthe dullsville candidates next time? >> it won't be dullsville if the republicans are lucky. mitch mcconnell is invisible because his job is a demolition expert. the guy blowing up the bridge doesn't want to be on tv.

john boehner put three members on it. we expect them to send up a recommendation no later than december of this year to deal with our long-term debt problem and we do know that we have a serious long-term debt problem unfunded liabilities related to social security, medicare, medicaid. i don't think we make what they're doing a political football. we'll wait for their report. if it's a responsible report that i can support, i will encourage my members to support it and the president will do the same thing. we could before the end of this calendar year actually have a significant impact on our long-term debt problem. >> why is it that you need a democratic president's commission on cutting the deficit to figure out what it is as republicans you think should be cut from federal spending? >> i don't think that it ought to be a political football between now and november. we have a bipartisan effort here. a serious bipartisan effort supported by the president, by leader boehner and myself. they'll report later this year. we'l
