booker t. washington's daughter. i remember being a little boy and sitting on my great-grandmother's lap and she would tell me what it was like to note the man she called the man with the big white hair. she would give me firsthand stories about her father, booker t. washington. one day, when i was trying to wrap my head around the distance between the generations, i had the thought that hands that had touched the great frederick douglass and hands that touched the great booker t. washington had also touched mine. in a sense, even with all those greats, i just stand one person away from history, and i stand one person away from slavery. we are not that far removed from slavery. as president of the douglass family initiative, we have the honor and privilege to dialogue with tens of thousands of students around the country, and the work we do around anti-human trafficking with prevention education and training of educators. when we have conversations with students, they tend to think when they look at the great heroes

i brought with me from baton rouge, 14 volume - booker t. washington and manuscript on race relations in mississippi, both of which, the jefferson davis papers and two big paper projects would be too much. then i started a series in black history with august meyer, in the subject area. talking to this about lsu and willing to switch to illinois along with his friends, the editor of the booker t. washington series. as the black history series developed by herbert gutman, author of a major book on the black family, i am sure you know it well, published a long critique on the economics of slavery in an african-american journal. i suggested to publish this as a book and new yorker on the cover in which a slave was told not to be too concerned because historians would show his life was not that rough after all. this book led to one of the press's most important areas of specialization. gutman asked if illinois would be interested in starting a series of working-class history. the leading scholars in the field, david montgomery and david brody him. within tw

booker t. washington, the most favorite -- famous african american in the country at that at that convention. the only african american to speak there. and he offered a compromise, it was called the atlantic compromise. he was essentially saying to black people in the south, do not challenge white people for political power. office.ry to run for do not try to desegregate schools and other institutions, cast down your buckets where you are. do industrial work, etc. that is something that made a lot of white southerners feel comfortable but he was saying to white southerners that black people should do exactly what the supreme court suggested should happen a year later. i do not have any evidence the supreme court was aware of what booker t. washington said but i would not be surprised if they were. of -- in whichra the jim crow laws came into being, but it was also because of the necessity of challenging segregation laws that were already in place. amendment is a 14th task. what were central to this? >> pl

it was the booker t. washington industrial schools in the south. and then she worked her way and would do things like work as a secretary for the naacp for no money. one of the big kingpins of the railroad. file all of those things and keep it all. there was nobody who had written a series books about it. 200 bucks on dr. king. nothing on rosa parks. i was going to write a biography of rosa parks in the lane steeled, her person said we would like it to be an african-american woman. well, i'm not that. i brought like three of my books to her to get my credentials to interview mrs. parks in all of this. as night i was walking back to the club in d.c. in the land still called me and said i didn't like hearing myself tell you that. you're good historians, you write a lot. there's nothing wrong with the sentiment has he spent time with mrs. parks. i went with her when she got her congressional gold medal. i would stay with her in the street in dupont circle home in washington. i went to detroit where she was a microscopic on the history of the undergrou
