that became a part of the core collection of the boston library. that is where most of his books survive. i had a research fellowship to do some work there when i was working on this project. i saw a lot of interesting books that used to be in george washington's library. it still just gives me goosebumps. [laughter] to pick up a book that was read by george washington and owned by george washington. but, like i said, the evidence was really lumpy. when i buy a book, i don't know when i started to do this, but i put my name on the title page and then i put the date that i bought the book. wouldn't it be great if everyone did that? [laughter] but not everyone does and george washington did not very often. every once in a while he did, but not often. he did usually put his name on it and his signature changed. you can see the adolescent george washington's signature and then the late 18 george washington's signature. as an adult, his signature got to be pretty consistent so it was hard to determine the books he added to the library after that point.
