to counter bot, we have a customer facing system which first detects bot net traffic and notices alertsnd providing them with tools to remove the infections. another area of threat is to the domain name system, which is a foundation and extraordinarily important and critical part of the internet. the domain name system or dns for short is responsible for translating names like comcast.com into ip addresses which are the addresses used to connect and route traffic across the internet. it is extremely important. a vulnerability can prevent an attacker to inject a fake answer. an attacker can direct traffic to a site like a banking site to computers that they control to collect log in information. the address in the web browser still appears correct. the long-term fix is to implement extensions or dns extensions. this involving someone doing two things. signing the domain names they own and service providers validating before connecting a user to that site. this is basically akin to a bank keeping your signature on file and cashing a check. it is important to note that the dns was develope

it's a piece of cake to build bot nets. ones that are 50,000, 100,000, we don't bother naming them. we track them and try to contain it. it's not a matter of blocking the i.p. addresses because we'd be blocking you. you probably wouldn't like you. sorry you can't get on the internet today. we'd shut the whole internet down if we did that. >> and in my opening statement, i mentioned the issue of supply chain. and the security that i think really needs to be brought to that. first of all, do you share these concerns about the supply chain and if so, what do you think would be the appropriate role for us to play in addressing it? i think it's a serious issue. our telecommunications network as we

other people that rent access to bot networks. you can rent bot nets by the hour. tell them where you want the bots to be, what kind of computers. payment network mechanisms between these parties. so it's very sophisticated. and if you think about from a criminal standpoint, it's a lot easier to do, like get a return on investment, this type of thing, than to do physically oriented crimes. the scale is so much larger. these are folks that operate across borders, internationally. and there is just an enormous amount of economic incentive for them to do it. unlike apt, in some respects, this is primarily an economic crime. apt is focused on intellectual property. this is all about the money. >> well, i guess mr. may hon, is there a possibility we have terrorists involved with this, that are part of this estonia -- the terrorists could go to this group or this federation across and are using them? is that a probability? >> terrorists use these types of schemes for funding. they need funding for their operations. number two, they use it as a communications system. they

marshals and they were able to disrupt the zeus bot net system now this is a large network of infected computers that had credit card information and other personal data of the servers that linked back to offices in pennsylvania and illinois. so this is a big announcement a big victory for microsoft it could prevent millions of people from having their information stolen but some people are saying you know what these people with microsoft in the u.s. marshals are the same people who are spying on you now they're simply using those by capabilities to get the bad guys to greg what's your take on all of this. it's an interesting one you know it's some point it feels really weird commending microsoft on something you know they've always been sort of i won't say the enemy but on the other side of a lot of these arguments but the work they're doing there really needs to be done it needs to be done on a far greater scale are getting rid of a lot of these bot nets but i think the one thing everyone is missing is the fact that they need to be attacking us more at home i mean these talking heads
