"the new york times" poll shows he's now second place to ben carson who is at 26% and still rising. trump this morning took to the phones and started calling into morning shows to beat up on ben carson. said he didn't understand the polls nationally or in iowa because in his view he's still the he took shots at ben car saying he flip-flopped on issues and there's questions to be answered. he said that carson's position on abortion has evolved. in fact, trump's position on abortion has also evolved. the key to carson's success seems to be with born again christians in eye warks social convft avs and religious conservatives and tea partiers. ben carson has a hefty lead in some cases more than 2-1 over donald trump when it comes to those key core proimary voters in the republican race. that's the up ballot part of this. the down ballot part of it -- and it will all be fought out on the debate stage

ali velshi is in boulder, colorado, the site of the debate. and he has a special pre-debate show coming up after the broadcast. ali, what are you working on? >> what i'm working on is managing my expectations. i have a broad sense of what they're talking about, but i'm hoping that they will be forced by the moderators of this economic debate to put some meat on those bones. i'm not holding my breath. it's too early to make sense of some of these candidates for positions on some of the issues like income equality and wage stagnation, like taxes, like death and climate control and change and energy policy. there's a lot of broad generalization that you hear about. and they all the growth to increase and jobs to be created and unemployment to decrease. so do we all. and the issue is how you get to it. they will talk a lot about taxes tonight, but not talk about how we'll get tax reform, with you you have not seen since the reagan era. what is is it that you're going to do when the congress cannot even pass a budget to get comprehensive tax reform

he's been doing that leading up to boulder. he said carson is low energy, light on immigration. >> and the economics debate as well. anyway, let's bring it back to markets. let's have a look at what we are expecting for u.s. trade. it is expected to be a negative open. this came from quite a strong finish to yesterday's trade. the hawkish tone from the fed in fact, welcomed by u.s. equity investors yesterday presumably because of its slight confidence in the economy. but today we are expecting to correct down by nine points to the s&p 500. let's look at european markets as well. decent trade yesterday partly because of earnings. partly because of the fed meeting. today we are protecting. it is negative. continental europe. germany down a quarter percent. >> let's look at the fed. it kept interest rates on hold. but they put the december rate hike in place. central bank made a direct timing reference in a statement issued after the meeting saying in determining whether it will be appropriate to raise a target range at the next m
