and then you have black boxes. made by honeywell. boxes, they black are orange boxes. this plane would have been equipped with two recorders. one of them was the flight data recorder. things like wing movement, settings. then you have the cockpit voice recorder. that has the most recent audio, up to two hours of material. after a crash, these are supposed to send out signals for about a month. they could still be underwater somewhere, which does make that signal little bit weaker.

after that time, the boxes are silent. and it becomes that much harder to ever find a box.possible, but that much harder. >> 30 days come and go and air france flight 447's flight recorders haven't been found. after a year of searching under water, french investigators turn to the world leaders in ocean exploration for help. the massachusetts based ocean oesh graphic institution. >> it's believed to be lost in one of the most mysterious and hard-to-reach places on earth. the ocean stretches for two miles. >> it was akin to looking in the rocky mountains for a shoe box with a flashlight. it takes specialized technology chlts. >> it can go down to about 6,000 milings. as the vehicle is going along, it will send out a pulse. if there's a rock or something hard out there, it will give us a really strong return. >> the search area is enormous, spanning a 40 mile radius on the bottom of the ocean. and the effort will take the team two separate expeditions one year apart. >> effectively, what they did was they gave us a smaller hay stack to look in and there was a needle. >> on so

it took two years to find the boxes, two and a half miles deep. they revealed pilot error as a factor in the crash. the black boxes are actually bright orange to make them easier to spot, located in the plane's tail and can only be disabled by pulling fuse-like circuit breakers in the cockpit. there are two, the flight data recorder logs about 25 hours of information, hundreds of details about the flight including time of day, directions and turns, air speed, if the plane is nose down or nose up. the cockpit voice recorder captures private conversations, for microphones on the pilot and co-pilot as well as a third mike that picks up sounds of anything unusual in the cockpit. noise of a struggle, an intruder or how the engines are running, and possibly even the sounds of the black boxes being disabled. that recording is on a two-hour loop so the fear is if it ran longer it could erase crucial conversations early in the flight when the plane first veered off course. the boxes emit an ultra sonic pulse or pinging sound once every 30 seconds, maybe lo

those black boxes from air france 447. 30 days but sometimes they last longer, right? >> yes. it's an art and a science. previous incidents i've heard them talk about flight 447, they went back, 34, 35 days. it's not like a timer that after 30 days it just switches off. beyond 30 days, it will degrade. >> so far, erik, everything that they have found has turned out to be garbage or jellyfish. talk about what floats in that area. how much garbage is there out there in the indian ocean? >> well, the ocean -- the indian ocean and most of the other oceans are really filthy. everything that is plastic, that is built to last and gets into the ocean just won't really decompose there. so you get something like a piece of fishing gear that can stay in the ocean for decades, easily, and everything gets accumulated. it gets swiped up in these areas called the garbage fetches. where they are searching now is really close to one of those. so you see a lot of garbage there. it comes from any coastline around the world, mostly in the ind

and that is a black box experiment.ants to tell you what went on and discern what happen in the plane. >> and what does it do in terms of what it can or can't tell us. and give all of the navigational perimeters. and the amount of spode in the tank and the pressure and probably 250 ballpark perimeters. and each one is like a different model of a car. >> and what can it tell us? you know, we want to know what happened to the plane and what happened before it vanished and can it answer those types of questions? >> it gives you an autopsy of the flight and give you a picture of what happened. one flight called the cockpit voice recorder keeps the last 30 minutes of the flight takenedants and might get in the officer of the cabin of the plane and anything that is said is recorded and soon as the plane crashes it is recording and all of the time the plane is rush running and it stops. you always have the last 30 minutes. >> i am following on what is running out of battery power. if it is lucky. does it still work. >> oh, sur
