here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason br.lls fargo stock bears watching today. they just released their earnings report. let's chat about that on this friday, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. wells fargo turned in a pretty solid 1st quarter as we really kick off the 1st quarter earnings season in earnest today with wells fargo and jpmorgan chase reporting. the san francisco-based bank wells fargo saw its profit rise 14% to $5.6 billion as revenue was down from a year earlier to 20.3 billion. they set aside less money to cover bad loans which is good news. and the bank which is the biggest mortgage writer in the business right now did see a lot less activity in that regard. refi's down significantly. also new purchase loans came in at $36 billion compared to $109 billion a year earlier. still, the earnings report did top estimates. wells fargo shares pretty flat in the early going. jpmorgan chase saw its profit dive by 20% and down 4% in early trading on wall street. >>> the labor depart
