seeing double the usual number of dead whales on beaches going from monterey all of the way up to fort bragg because of the weather. nbc bay area mark matthews has been talking to the director at the marine mammal center about the whales that have washed up in the past couple of months and he joins us from the center in marin county. mark? >> anybody who has been to the beach in the last couple of months has seen evidence of what the scientists are telling us and the link between these dead whales is not the cause of death, it is as you say, the weather. >> look at this beach filled with the remains of tiny jellyfish pushed on to the shore by winds out of the west. the dead whales we are seeing are at the other end of the weight scale, but the reason we are seeing them is the same. >> so we don't think we're seeing an uptick in whales but because the currents and the winds are we're seeing them on our beaches. >> scientists say all sorts of things are killing the whales and this baby gray appears to have been attacked by orcas and the humpback in pacifica looks like it had been hit by a ship

>> they did it because there is a general threat, not a specific threat against fort bragg or fort hood but just a general threat. they're doing what's wise, tightening up security at the bases. but the military is not in panic mode and we shouldn't be hysterical about it. they're competent. doesn't mean a terrorist can't kill a soldier at a base or his spouse? but we're taking reasonable measures that fall well short of hysteria. >> what about isis? we keep reading about director jim comey is talking about thousands in 50 states. but what we're hearing is it's not just the disaffected young kids from poor neighborhoods who would be joining a gang so they join isis instead. some of these are upper middle class kids. what is the attraction? >> first of all, it's always been a myth that you recruit terrorists only from the lower classes. it's people that have to have a sense of people not recognized for their magnificent value, et cetera. so it's really the entitled attitude of the kids in the middle class who do this. what is appealing to them? what is appealing to them is a great deal.
