brian? >> tom costello starting us off again tonight from our d.c. newsroom. tom, thanks. >>> we have a firsthand view tonight from malaysia of this search underway from what so far remains a kind of wide bodied ghost ship. nbc news flew along today on board one of the search aircraft deployed, and now fanning out over a wider area. a huge effort over a vast amount of water. our report tonight from nbc's keir simmons in kuala lumpur. >> reporter: day after day, this military transport plane has been searching. today we took off with them. life jackets are needed because we will fly so low, sometimes at just 500 feet, scouring the ocean above naval ships, all looking for a plane that simply vanished. we're flying over the malacca strait, the water stretches out on either side of us, you can see ocean on this side, ocean on that side. all day we fly, looking for any clue. we seem to be banking around as if they saw something? the plane turns hard to get a closer look at some debris. false alar

for brian it did. he had the addition of having experienced a higher level of trauma both physical and psychological and he did develop post-traumatic stress disorder. he also had to struggle with losing his career, losing cognitive function, questioning who he was, if he would never be able to succeed in the world again, and he turned to alcohol a lot as a coping mechanism and the alcohol abuse was definitely very negative aspect of his recovery. the way that i was able to see it later was that every bad thing for him build on every other bad thing and the negative downward spiral so with pt std couldn't sleep, not sleeping hurts your cognitive functions, having worse and cognitive function made him more depressed which made him drink more which made us fight more so it spiraled down worse and worse and we had to find ways to turn that back the other direction but for brian, it took a lot longer than it did for me, both the physical, psychological and cognitive -- for him was actually six years after

i know that brian did his best.e's great at what he does but clearly there were mistakes made we want to learn from those mistakes. >> you were the tiebreaker vote on the metropolitan transportation commission when it approves the design for this new eastern span. if you had to do it all over again would you do anything differently? >> it was a subcommittee of ntc and i was one of the members and there was a professional group giving us advice. i think the design was a mistake and i think it's a buj bridge and clearly we tried to do something aspirational that had never been done, of its type and i think we could have done just as well if we were able to do. >> or perhaps, retrofit the old bay bridge. you think that would have been better than the new design? >> i don't know. we were given specific cost estimates of what it would do for that and what we would get if we built this bridge. it's hindsight is 20/20. i think the design drove a lot of the things that have resulted in a lot of innovation but a lot of risk

church member brian plawer was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.f god church bombing, white used a stronger bomb since this was his primary target. he placed the bomb on top of an outdoor air conditioner, this one had a timer designed to explode during the sunday service. 33 people were injured. in october of 1998, a grand jury concluded richard white built both bombs and murdered brian plawer. the forensic evidence left no doubt. >> these investigations did not result in the prosecution. it was closure for the victims' families. >> it doesn't make the hurt less. you know, there is still pain. there is still, you know, anger. there is still hurt, and loss and grief that continues and continues and continues. >> with the bombing, the misconception is the blast destroys the evidence. the blast disperses the evidence, where it makes it harder for us to find it. but we'll find it.

tom, good evening. >> hi, brian. we knew that whoever planned the u-turn in the plane, did so with the help of the on board computer. tonight we learned when the turn was programmed in. at least 12 minutes before the co-pilot calmly said good night to the air traffic controllers. that would further indicate the you h turn was planned and executed in the cockpit before the controllers lost contact. tonight, nbc news has learned that flight 370's u-turn was manually programmed into the computer in the cockpit. that means the u-turn was premeditated. executed only the last radio call and after the transponders went dead. if the pilot entered that turn, why? >> some pilots will program in an alternate flight plan in the event of an emergency. we don't know what the reason was for this time flight plan, whether to go back to kuala lumpur or to take it back from beijing. >> reporter: a retired captain helped re-create in a 737 what we know, someone turned off the transponder with the flip of a switch. >> you can see i can
