ktvu's brian flores is at the scene along jer raw lin road -- ger raw -- jeralyn road. what happened, brian? >> reporter: we are and out the 63 -- we're on the 6300 block of jeralyn. there is a lot of damage to the back of the house. we just finished talking with the homeowner a few minutes ago. he's lived in the home for 17 years by himself. he says he was sound asleep at midnight. he woke up to his home completely blanketed and choking. he said it was so intense, he barely made it out alive. he said he believes the fire started in the kitchen but unsure how. he was treated for smoke inhalation but he's back home arresting -- resting. here's what he said. >> i'm so thankful that i'm alive. >> the center of the investigation, we'll -- we're having more witnesses and we'll investigations and we'll find out the cause of the fire. >> reporter: he ran to a nearby denny's to call for help, the homeowner said. he arrived back at 6:00 this morning still shaken up. the homeowner said there's significant damage. he said it could have been much worse. we're live in richmond, nine
