brian kelly one of our traders has a question for you, sir. >> brian kelly, i'm curious. we've seen some labor unrest, some bad labor unrest in south africa. you tend to operate in the americas. do you have a kpelti ivcompetit advantage for that or are you also seeing labor issues? >> we think that is a competitive advantage. we design the company purposely to operate and build new mines in areas of relatively low political risk. so our production is focused in north america. about half of it comes from canada. 30% from mexico or in the u.s. we're also operating in areas in south america but overall, we have a very low risk profile with respect to not just geopolitical risk but the kinds of labor issues that we've seen in south africa recently. >> charles -- >> we're not experiencing anything like. that. >> a few years barrick bought back their hedge, about $750 or so ago. give or take. i'm sure you get calls all the time from trading desks looking for you to hedge your production. obviously you're not looking to do that. at what price does hedging production get interest

let's get the latest trades from steve weiss and john and jerry and brian kelly. how about it? give me the scoop. does the market continue to go up? >> i think it does. i was wildly bullish a week ago, still bullish, a little bit off, the moment of truth will be as we get close to earnings, we saw fedex yesterday announce earnings and guess what, the stock is up today. ups is up today. you're in a for giving market with the governments saying here is cash, it is free, you take it, take risk assets and go have fun. until that is over we'll keep going higher. >> dr. jay, you're positive on the market. are you still? >> i am still. i love that steven says we're having fun. we are. it is fun when you're long and if you're short and the market is going down but there have been few of those days, only three in the month of september and i bet you those were mondays because what is it -- it is a crazy number. there are a lot of folks who i continue to unfortunately be against doug cass on this chasing performance and going to continue to chase, i believe, for the next quarter. >> gras

brian kelly joins us on fast line with his take on that news that we got from spain. anything new here? doesn't sound like it. >> i'll tell you what was new. it came at 12:17 there was a headline today that ali rend, the vice chair of the e.u., economic affairs commissioner said that what spain has done went beyond what the e.u. had recommended and that's when the market really started to take off and the implication is that spain basically agreed to a bailout without agreeing to a bailout. so the door is open now. they've done everything that the e.u. has asked, read that as everything the germans have asked them to do. so now you've taken that tail risk off. spain will probably ask for a bailout sometime between tomorrow and october 21st. that's what the market's expecting. that's where i really think you saw that risk on trade happen. >> b.k., it's karen. let me ask you something. hasn't that news about spain been there for several weeks? why is this additional news today? i understand what you're saying about a little bit of marginal positive news. the markets ral

here now is "fast money" contributor brian kelly, co-founder of shelter harbor capital. you know, brian, there's so much event risk around nowadays. you can't tell what's going to happen in the middle east. you can't tell what's going to happen in europe. you can't tell what's going to happen in the american elections. how can these guys actually sit out the whole quarter? >> i'm not really sure how you can sit out the whole quarter. i guess if you're up 30% for the year, why wouldn't you probably take some off the table? but with volatility so low, can you also buy some puts. not only that, there aren't a lot of money managers out there that are really that far ahead of the averages, so more likely is the fact that people are behind, and you can get kind of this self-fulfilling type of rally going on as the market goes higher. money managers have to participate over the next -- over the next quarter. >> just in a technical sense, don't a heck of a lot of these hedge fund managers have to stay in, have to maneuver because they haven't done all that well this year? >> yeah

. >> brian kelly, where do you come down? you follow a lot of stocks. is now the time to sell apple? is this run at least in the near term over? >> no. no. they sold out. that's the headline right there. they sold out of their product. >> didn't they have to do better to justify where the stock has gone? >> i don't think so. they sold 5 million. they have a better product than anybody else out there. the stock is still relatively cheap if you look at valuation metrics. they have a great product cycle coming up. it bounced off $680 technically. i think you can buy it right here. i don't understand what the negativity is about it. >> let's welcome brian marshall with more on how to trade apple when expectations are so high. notes are flying across the street today, tons of noise out there about this past weekend. set the record streit straight. did apple have a great weekend for its iphone sales? did it meet the expectations the market thought it would? >> i think it was optically challenged. if you look at it, our expectations for 6 million to 8 million.

. >> brian kelly. i'm curious. we have seen "wall street journal" come out and talk about qe. in his speech there was one line that said the markets are just beginning to realize how forcefully the federal reserve is going to support the economy. based on that and knowing that ben bernanke is a communication specialist what makes you think he is going to go back on his word? >> i'm not real comfortable -- i am uneasy because at every chance they have had the fed has done at least as much or more than expected. they have always taken the more easy approach. in this case inflation expectations are higher than they have been. asset prices. i think the case for qe spurring growth is quite weak. bernanke's case that he made was refuted pretty strongly by a number of participants there. i think they would be stepping on operation twists. they pounded the table that this was a big deal and it would be hard for them to justify going back only a couple of months later and saying twist wasn't that big of a deal. i think the election does play a role as much as they talk about not being

. >> david kelly, brian sullivan out in san francisco. i want to step away from the apple coverage for a second. i have a very fundamental question for you. can economies recover in periods of austerity? >> they can recover with a little austerity. you have to take it very easy. in the united states we do need to bring the deficit down but we need sort of a fiscal ladder to bring it down 1% at a time. have you an economy that's shrinking, the best thing to do is to stop trying to cut the deficit of the current year, get growth going. then once you have 1% to 2% growth -- >> the trouble is you have to allow for economies to restructure. so if you don't bring -- in some cases, for example, with greece -- i'm sure michelle will tell us in spain as well -- if you don't cut back some of that government spending, you don't force any restructuring that's necessary to lay the foundation for growth. >> that's absolutely right. >> i can give you an important example of restructuring, guys? >> go ahead, michelle. >> here in spain, they have finally
