brian rooney is in california tonight. brian? >> reporter: and charlie, those are actually happy worlds coming from a tire commander. behind me is an area that firefighters burned out. the smoke is the on top of it, the wind is down. despite some clusters of flames, all in all, it's been a pretty good day. the fire swirls in or the nay domes of smoke and flame, spinning along ridges above the suburbs during the night. bulldozers cut fire lines high in the mountains while ground crews set their own fires to burn out brush ahead of the main fire. homeowner david stayed up all night watches the hills. >> last night it was really bad. it was just flames shooting 80 feet high. it was really, really scary. >> reporter: today, firefighters trooped like an army through neighborhoods of empty houses. a crackle of flames mixed with the wail of sirens. this fire is now 15 miles north to south, and 20 east to west. expanding by 16,000 acres overnight, which is actually good news. the explosive growth is slowing, as firefighters work fast to

as brian rooney reports, officials say they should finish the repair by tomorrow. >> reporter: the san francisco bay bridge has been under reconstruction for years. workers were just connecting a temporary span, so they could start tearing down an old section of bridge, when inspectors found the crack, way up there over the road. now, the clock is ticking down to what could become a chaotic, post labor day rush hour for the bay area. >> once you find something like that, you have to repair it before you can put traffic back on a structure. >> reporter: the crack is on a part called an i-bar. plain as day, it's broken. two braces weighing 18,000 pounds that could take the load of the broken part, had to be manufactured over the weekend in arizona, and flown by charter jet to san francisco. >> they've been working through the night. >> reporter: closing it is serious. seven bridges serve the san francisco bay area. but without the bay bridge, right there in the middle, it's a long drive and a rush hour nightmare for many thousands of people. one bridge expert says the bay bridge should n

brian rooney has more. >> reporter: investigators say they might digging monday, in a specific patchf phillip garrido's yard, after it attracted cadaver dogs and something showed on this ground-penetrating radar. >> we did learn there was an anomaly noted in the same general area where the cadaver dogs hit yesterday. >> reporter: crews continued knocking down sheds and pulling up concrete slabs. in the process, they found another piece of bone. >> it was in a different location than the bone located on that property earlier in the week. and it's too early to even begin to guess what kind of bone that might be, human or animal. >> reporter: somewhere here, 29-year-old jaycee dugard was held captive for 18 years. investigators are now tearing this place apart, looking for clues to the disappearances of 9-year-old michaela garecht in 1988, and 13-year-old ilene misheloff in 1989, whose kidnappings had similarities to do that dugard. garrido's own yard is the focus of attention. but also, to the neighboring property, where he's had access for 19 years. the clearing of both properties has

our brian rooney has the details. >> reporter: investigators brought in six cadaver-sniffing dogs.nd two of them hit on the same patch of dirt on phillip garrido's property. >> the first dog was tentative on its indication. the second dog was more direct and very -- indicating very quickly. >> reporter: so far, they've used bulldozers, chain saws, ground-penetrating radar. even searched on hands and knees. they've hauled away truckloads of junk and debris, while also searching the inside of garrido's home. but they are likely to start digging where the dogs may have smelled something. >> it's an open-ground area. we're going to run the x-ray equipment over it. and we'll eventually be digging in that location. >> reporter: they're looking for any sign that garrido kidnapped ma kayla garecht in 1988. police see similarities between those cases and the abduction of jaycee dugard, who spent 18 yearin captivity, and had 2 daughters with her kidnapper, garrido. photos taken from the county building department, show how much debris garrido collected. it may be helpful. >> phillip garrido

brian rooney report. >> reporter: investigators brought in six cadaver sniffing dogs and said two of place in garrido's yard. one of them somewhat tentatively, the other more certain. >> one of the dogs gave an indication in one of the areas of the garrido residence. we brought in a second dog and he also indicated on that particular part of property. >> they say they're going to bring in a second set of dogs that are trained to sniff for older sets of bones. otherwise they have searched on their knees, they've used bulldozers, and have hauled away truckloads and truckloads full of junk. they've used ground penetrating radar, which they're going to use more. they say within the next day or so, they're going to stop over the weekend, but they will continue and eventually will dig in that spot where theogs hit. this investigation and the search is likely to go on for several more days. >> it took a jury in louisville, kentucky less than two hours to return a not guilty verdict in the case of a coach accused in a player's death. david stinson was charged after a 15-year-old sophomore pl

but our brian rooney joins us from outside the garrido home. good morning, brian. >> reporter: garrido's property has be searched for. but they brought 60 officers in here yesterday. and this will be a much more detailed search for the next couple of days. this time, they say they'll pick the place apart. even look underground for possible evidence of these two other missing girls. >> we don't know for sure yet if we'll be razing the building. but we are very interested in what might be behind walls, under flooring, under the ground. that is a possibility. >> reporter: they're looking for tres of 9-year-old michaela garrett, who was abducted from hayward, california. police say they see similarities between their disappearances and that of 29-year-old jaycee dugard, who was freed last month, after living 18 years and having 2 daughters with accused kidnapper, phillip garrido. >> we do have single witness who states that he saw eileen get into a vehicle, which is similar to a vehicle which was removed from this property. >> reporter: police also
