brian webb for cbs news, new york. >>> a wild scene caught on camera in brazil. a man was wrestled to the ground and detained after he tried to steal the olympic torch. the man tried to break through the line of security guards accompanying the torch bearer. the torch will arrive in rio august 4th, one day ahead of the opening ceremony of the olympic games. >>> the coast guard is trying to track down a man accused of making fake mayday calls at a significant cost to the coast guard. he's made 28 fake calls in two years including a couple just a few days ago in maryland. he uses an emergency radio channel. coast guard has spent about half a million dollars sending out crews to respond. >>> the waters of pacifica are a hotbed of marine activity right now. we sent john ramos to check it out and he saw some amazing things. >> reporter: saturday evening a kpix photographer was shooting off pacifica pier when she got this amazing shot of a humpback whale lunge feeding at the surface. we thought it was worth a story. but it turns out, it's not news to those at the pier.

brian webb is here in new york with the latest. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the chaos came to an end in dallas finally when authorities say the final suspect shot himself in a parking garage early this morning. this is after that gunfire erupted at what was a peaceful protest. dallas police say officers were ambushed thursday night when snipers opened fire on officers during a protest downtown. people ran for their lives. officers used their patrol cars to take cover. eleven officers were shot. five died. d.a.r.t. officer misty mcbride was shot in the arm. her young daughter spoke to reporters outside the hospital. >> i'm just glad that she -- that she's alive, really. >> reporter: one woman attending the demonstration was shot in the leg. she used her body to shield her son. authorities took three people into custody in the hours after the shootings, including two individuals seen tossing camouflaged bags into the back of a black mercedes. tensions were already high in dallas and beyond, following the fatal police shootings of two black men this week. the go

brian webb reports. >> thousands of people filled the streets of turkey's capitol city saturday chanting support for their democratic government. the outpouring of emotion follows it coup attempt led by a faction of the military using tanks and gunfire. istanbul's airport and major bridges were shut down. but the president urged people to rise up and fill the street, and that's exactly what they did. daylight showed the extensive damage. battered buildings, crushed cars, and bodies lying in the street. turkey's president says those responsible will pay a heavy price. the government has arrested or fiefred thousands of -- fired thousands of troops and judges believed to be followers of the coup. he publicly condemned the coup but turkey wants him extradited. >> we invite them to present us with legitimate evidence that withstands scrutiny. >> turkey is a nato member and ra key strategic -- strategic an ally of the u.s. >> he says he no longer follows political developments in turkey. >>> a plane from the -- others refused to get on board. flight operations in istanbul are returning to nor
