well. melissa: brian cohello, analyst with "morningstar" what is your reaction. >> small beat not what investorsere looking for particularly on the watch side. this is ho-hum quarter because the iphone has been out six months to this point. the real number is the watch. the numbers don't indicate there is a lot of watch sales. melissa: apple is the ultimate sandbagger. investors might say, what is the problem? they beat. they always beat. beat earnings per share eight out of past 10 quarters. what is your first question for the call, brian? >> i think my first question any sort of color we can get on the watch, whether it was constrained due to supply. we knew there was a supply shortage when it was initially launched. any insight we can get in terms of units, asps. if we had revenue number. it is hard to break out how many unit sales versus -- melissa: speaking of unit sales, let's go to adam shapiro because he is trying to drill down on some. numbers. adam what do you see. >> iphone sales were 49.3 million. 50 million. previously quarter 61 million. third quarter always slow for iphone sales.

well. >> but brian, president obama didn't mention them at all. what do the family members think about that? do they understand why these issues were kept separate? >> there's certainly been criticism about the fact that the u.s. has not tied these cases more closely together at least not publicly. the family members have been muted in that criticism trying to be sensitive about how much they say and don't say. for example, the rezaian family thanking the government for the efforts they have made and they believe this is a stepping stone to having their loved ones come home. each case is different and every case is complicated. jason rezaian has dual citizenship and so iran says they don't recognize his american citizenship at all. it's a tragedy that he's been behind bars. he should be out covering this story today, this historic moment. there's a lot of hope and optimism because these people seem like pawns in a geopolitical process. hopefully their status will change. >> brian stelter, thank you so much. >>> and tonight anderson cooper will spe

>> well brian, j & p securities is not all that excited about the apple watch and its first iterationot shortcomings badry life and lacking certain features. the app world isn't fully evolved. there's some bugs with it so as a first step for apple the apple watch is fine but it's really about the road map going forward in terms of it evolving health kit, home kit and making the ecosystem all that much stickier. let's put the absolute number of apple watches and what it does in the near term aside and look tat holistically and in that sense we're very comfortable. >> this company used to be called apple computer. it's now just apple. do we care about mac books and the imac and computers anymore, or is it literally only the phone? >> yeah, pretty much only the phone. i mean, we care about those things, i guess. we care about everything that they do because that's our job, but the phone dominates profits and without the phone the other stuff doesn't matter. you have to get the phone right to get the stock right. >> you've got a neutral in the stock, andy. what do you need to hear tonight

brian, what's in store for the holiday weekend? >> well, let's begin by talking about what's in store for tonight by showing you the hi-def doppler radar. there's still a chance that we get showers or thundershowers tonight. look at the right-hand side your screen. see that little complex coming in towards stockton? right there. it could actually hold together well enough to create some problems by brentwood. look at the lightning strikes they get in the sierra. see that? each one indicates a lightning strike. so it's a threat tonight. slowly though the overall trend is clearing things out cooling it down, drying it out. we did cool down today the highs yesterday on the left the highs today on the right and so san francisco cooled by 4 degrees concord with 10 degrees cooler. it was 12 degrees cooler in livermore. so the overall trend we are heading in the right direction, as for the 4th-cast for inside, you will have to stay tuned. that's coming up. >> may the 4th be with you. brian mohr, nbc 10 news. >>> well the heat is still on out there and it's still dangerous. we are still talking about a first alert weather day going to go on until about 8:00 tonight. temperatures are still going to be feeling close to 100 degrees until then. still dangerous heat and we are looking at temperatures in the 90s. tomorrow, another hot day. here's a live look outside. cape may right along the shore. you would think you could go to the shore for relief and in some areas, you can. they are in about the mid 80s. but areas close to cape may like wildwood, for example, temperatures there 88 degrees. feels more like 95 when you factor in the humidity. really, even along the shore, we still have pretty high temperatures. mount pocono little relief there, 84 degrees. that's what it feels like. this is what it feels like outside when you factor in the humidity. feels like 98 degrees in philadelphia 99 in bensalem 101 in millville, 100 in dover, 100 degrees in atlantic city, 98 degrees in wilmington. we still have that excessive heat warning out from new castle county up

>> well pretty obvious, brian.he huckster chances the pea so the customer loses his or her money. i think this shem game has been taking place for a long time but certain will i more evidenced in china in terms of the market going down the market going back up. margin requirements being changed, et cetera, et cetera. stocks being delisted in terms of activity. we see the same thing basically in all central banks in terms of their interest rates, in terms of quantitative easing from the ecb. it's a manipulation. it may be a purposeful manipulation in terms of strengthening a real economy, but there's no doubt that the pea in this case the price of assets, i suppose, is sort of a question mark. ultimately when central banks stop manipulating markets, where that pea goes is i think up for grabs and probably the arrow points downward. >> but how does that make you feel, bill? you are a professional investor you've been one of the best in the world for a long time. your job is to grow the wealth of janus' clients. if yo

brian kelly, what do you make of this? >> well, what's happened over the last month or actually couple of months here is you've seen a tremendous amount of volatility in the commodity space, in foreign currency and hasn't translated into the u.s. equity market. i do think ultimately when you see oil going down like this and the intraday reversal today in the dollar to me is notable because that shows there's the big carry trade that's being unwind as commodities come down. ultimately that will hurt u.s. stocks. >> we have seen elevated levels, though, of volatility in the oil markets and the currency markets for quite some time and the markets are still very close to record highs. granted they've had their ups and downs but still right now close to record highs. what happened to that theory that eventually that volatility will creep in? >> hasn't yet. >> not yet. >> i mean, we had the vix hover around 12 again. it's pretty unbelievable the s&p is still at these levels. it leads me to believe once again, although i don't think the
