today i rise to honor my friend, brit ortiz, and congratulation brit on his retirement from a long impressive career in higher education. brit is the son of godman ortiz. he grew up in old town bolito, california. his mother was an assembly line worker and later became a floor manager. his father is an electrician. brit attended public schools and graduated from high school in 1979. he went on to attend the university of california at santa basha as a first generation college student -- barbara as a first generation college student. i know his journey well, throw i grew up miles away south of him in the san fernando valley, i attended public schools. defied low expectation from my teachers and counselors and others just like latino students like myself and brit, we went on to be first generation college students at u.c. santa barbara. with dedication, great, and hard work, brit earned his bachelor's degree in 1985 with a double major in sociology and psychology. he received his master's degree in educational leadership and policy studies at the university of california northridge. his first f
