. >> and i'm sam brock. breaking news this morning, a broken water main leaves a hole in the street and a lot of other problems in san francisco's patrero hills area. this is impacting some patients. good morning, stephanie chuang. >> reporter: the good news is it looks like all of the water will be back on in the area. it is an 1897 cast iron pipe that ruptured. you can see the workers cleaning up all the mud. at the top of the hill is where you have the source of the problem. we have video that was shot earlier this morning that shows all of that water. the sinkhole itself about two square feet. the city's water department says it will be spending the entire day repairing the line, excavating the area, taking out the old pipe and putting in a permanent replacement. a facilities employee says there are three water mains in this area and if one line is off, one of the other two lines can usually pick up the slack. but the nearby building is so old, there wasn't water for some portion of this morning. again,

i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. right now a house burning in milpitas. >> reporter: good morning. we're at a two-story home on farm crest avenue in milpittias. when firefighters arrived they found four people stuck on the roof trying to escape the fire. apparently the grandmother was burned and was transported to the hospital while the other three residents, a woman and her two daughters were being rescued by ladder. a couple of this many ended up jumping roof about 10 to 12 feet. understandably they were still pretty shaken up and did not want to go on camera. about 20 people were evacuated from the homes in five areas. neighbors have been allowed back into their homes but firefighters will remain out here for about another hour. some more sad news for their family. they had reported that their dog was inside the home. firefighters went in the first time and they did not find him. when they went back in side, they found the dog and he was deceased. >> definitely sad news. >> we've been in and out of systems for the

. >> and it also happens to be friday and i'm sam brock. a half dozen homes are flooded as a water from a broken pipe came gushing down a san francisco street overnight. this happened not far from candlestick park. stephen tyrone joh stephanie chuang joins us live. investigators say this is no typical water main break. >> reporter: good morning. investigators saying this is a little built larger. this is a 1953 cast iron pipe so the line is a little bit older. they capped the break at about 4:00 this morning. they're trying to get to the water line to figure out how to repair the thing. that does mean the water was gushing down the street for four hours this morning. homeowners were out with their gloves and boots, out of bed early sleeping out the water, which we're told was as high as a foot or more into their homes. at first it was believed 25 homes were flooded but it turns out it was 6 or 7. one car fell into a sinkhole. just a few years ago, they were only focusing on replaces four miles of water line per year. >> we're already upgrad

. >> and i'm sam brock. >> the u.s. is gearing up to boost the screening of travelers at several of the country's busiest airports in the hopes of keeping the ebola virus from spreading any further. this move comes after the president declared the ebola virus a national priority. >> reporter: that's right. the president did announce yesterday that the research is focused on how to boost the passenger screening process at airports like sfo. he made that announcement adding how to best ensure medical professionals know what to do should they come across a suspected case of ebola. 50,000 containers of dr. dolan's hydrating treatment, drip drop, are headed overseas. >> 11% of surveyed americans are very worried about ebola exposure with 21% indicating they are somewhat worried. we did speak with officials here at sfo who say in the meantime they do feel prepared with the cdc experts to join first responders should there be a suspected case, they've got the ability to meet aboard the aircraft and assess the situation right a

. >> and i'm sam brock. police are still on the scene of an east bay walmart after an alleged shoplifter opened up fire at the walmart in san leandro. that is where we find nanette miranda. this really shook some people up. good morning. >> definitely. it looks like the store just opened, as it does every morning at 6:00 a.m. witnesses say gunshot rang out at this walmart just before closing around midnight. this created some very scary moments for customers. according do some shoppers, a loss prevention worker confronted alleged shoplifters. s they say one of the suspects pulled out a gun and one witness believes he heard eight round, which sent people scrambling for cover. many said they found safety in a back room of the walmart. at first they thought the situation wasn't real. we never would have thought it was a gunshot until we started hearing people screaming and then we heard more gunshot and then we realized it was real, it wasn't a joke. >> police say two suspects were arrested. one of them had to

. >> and i'm sam brock. breaking news this morning. water pouring down a san francisco street overnight. this as crews work to cap a major water line break happening at 22nd and vermont street near petraro hill. this is becoming an all-too-familiar scenario in the city. >> that's right, infrastructure is what we're hearing. it was an 1897 cast iron pipe that broke. the focus is on the hill where the city water department is set to be here all day to cut out the damaged pipe and put in a replacement. water was gushing down around the sinkhole around two square feet. the biggest concern was water supply to hospital buildings. it would have them were cut off this morning. the good news is water is back on for everyone. we were at another line rupture this month that flooded a few homes near candle stick. the utilities commission said it's doing 16 miles of replacement every year, but it's also trying out new, innovative pipeline technology from japan, which is supposed to withstand earthquakes and avoid these types of line breaks. this is
