joining me now is cnn political analyst ron brownstein. ska scalise was a rising star.on current facts it looks like he will survive this. under information that he did not really know the nature of this group. that you have not seen yet a critical mass really even of democrats from the state, much less republican colleaguings who are demanding that he go. >> do you think this sets up a dangerous precedent if democrats push not to have him removed from leadership not because of something he said but because he spoke to someone that i guess most people would disagree with their views. that could be turned against. so democrats at some point. >> well look politicians, i mean it is fair for politicians to say they do not always know the full group of every group they address, particularly when they are lower on kind of the ladder and don't have the staff to vet these organizations as they might have as they ascend to higher positions. but, you know, i think that -- as i say, on the current factings factingsfacts, i think there is not any kind of systematic push. and even s

ron brownstein up this for talking with us.optimistic president obama as he presented his initial tichs including higher taxes on those making as much but what's the point? always there's more about setting the stage for the next white house race. >> i think first, your point is absolutely right. this of not a chasen blilt after the republican revolution declaring the era of big government is over as he famously did in one state of the union. the one word this described the speech above also was probably swagger. even before his ad-libbed, sharp retort to republicans when he said i don't have any more elections to run. this was primarily about setting the terms of debate going forward, and into 201. in terms of legislative action. on the other hand he is moving through unilateral executive action immigration, climate change normalization with cuba. that is more than just poilgzing, that -- positioning. it is pushing forward and daring republicans to stop him. >> the main criticism from the republicans is that obama reports big

programs approved and paid for, et cetera here to talk about it is cnn senior political analyst ron brownsteinnal. good to see you. and larry sabideau director of politics at the university center. good to you, as well. ron, you first. the president could talk more about raising this $320 billions in tax revenue by way of dwen and capital gains -- dividend and capital gains tax, helping people get 401(k) plans through employers. what is the tone likely as it appears this president will be spending or even receiving in those chambers? >> look i think you have to look at the kind of ideas the president puts forward through the rest of his tenure in two very different categories. almost anything that requires legislative approval is his attempt to frame the debate for the remaining two years of his presidency and into 2016. as erain noted, given -- erin noted, begin the priorities of the majorities in both chambers i don't think there's going to be much they agree on, ideas like universal access to community college or paid family leave and much less tax ideas are very unlikely for this republica

let's bring in ron brownstein cnn political analyst and editorial of the "national journal" and miss ranna foroohar happy new year to both of you good people. all the best of health and happiness. when you look politics economics, hand in hand especially on the government level -- they got that $1.1 trillion spending bill. the process is what is going to be predictive for the economic environment wlaxt do you see going forward about what needs to be done in d.c. to keep the markets stable? >> business people have always complained the political gridlock was one of the reasons we've had a slow economy in the last few years. by some estimates it shaved a third of the growth we should have had off. what tends to happen is these two things go in snowball cycles. as the economy gets better there tends to be a more collaborative environment. think the question is how strong will the economy be in the year ahead and will the recovery be more broadly felt? if you start to see a middle class feel stronger people feel we're in this together you could see more collaboration around political iss

i want to bring in ron brownstein and gloria borger. economy is improving. >> yes. and there's less pessimism in the country. when there's less pessimism in the country, people benefit. people go to the gas pump and see that the prices are lower and wages are starting to tick up a little bit. this as dana was saying becomes a political moment forivotal moment for the president. he has two years left. one in which he can try and get things done. he can set the agenda not only for his legacy to a great degree this middle class economics about his legacy but also about the democratic agenda heading into the 2016 election. as they say, they want to turn the page. the recession is not hanging over their head anymore. they want to turn the page go on offense and do what they wanted to do years ago. >> interesting added point on the economy, i put out numbers today from the last poll last week and overall people are more optimistic about the economy. if you look at who is more optimistic about the economy, white collar whites college-educated
