it all happened around 1:00 this afternoon here at 6:31 east 96th street in the brownsville section of brooklyn. we are tolby the time firefighters arrived, flames were already roaring out of the windows, trapping a young family on the floor above. rescue crews had two immediate battles on their hands. beat back the flames and rescue lives come first but authorities explain there was a wall of flames blocking their way. amazingly crews were able to save a 2-month-old baby, a 2- year-old toddler, 3-year-old, 7- year-old and 8-year-old plus their mother and another adult. the young family given oxygen at the scene and more importantly, another night to call their observe. the father says he was at a laundromat when the fire almost took his life. his family's life. >> it was up there. smoke out the window. they said it's hard to breathe. there. everybody grabbed everything to get out. >> the people were -- made sure they were covered and rescued then we put the fire out. they did a great job. >> we couldn't bring him down condition. we had to shelter in place for a while. >> the father te

investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire in the apartment in brownsville yesterday. flames quickly spread trapping five children including a two- month-old baby and two adults in their apartment. the children's father at a laundromat came runing when he saw the smoke coming from the building. >> it was up there, the smoke out of the window. they said it's hard to breathe. i have a two-month-old baby. everybody was grabbing everything we could grab to get out. >> firefighters brought the family to safety. the red cross is helping the displaced residents find shelter. >>> city council members and health officials are holding a town hall meeting in the south bronx to address concerns about the legionnaires outbreak. the department of health says 71 people are diagnosed with the disease since mid-july. that is up from 650. four people have died. all the fatalities are older people with preexisting health five building have been decontaminated. the meeting will be held at the bronx museum of the arts from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. stay with eyewitness news for complete coverage.
