monte francis is in san bruno tonight with the story for us. >> reporter: diane, people here in san bruno are rebuilding and trying to move on following the events of last september. this week brought new tragedies and new doubts about the safety of pipelines nationwide. >> oh, my god, this is beyond belief. >> reporter: the gas line explosion late thursday night shook the town of hanoverton, ohio. it followed a horrific scene in pennsylvania just a day earlier. >> i heard this awful bang. and i thought my roof fell down. >> reporter: five people were killed after an 83-year-old underground gas main exploded, damaging or destroying 47 homes and businesses. the cause is still under investigation. meanwhile, federal investigators have determined the cause of the explosion in san bruno last september, which killed eight people and destroyed 30 homes. they found faulty wells on the pipeline, which was installed more than 50 years ago. >> and we're monitoring accidents like this one in allentown, all over the country. and so we are very concerned about the number of pipeline accidents, and the

marla is live near that explosion site in san bruno. she's got an update. >> reporter: brent, good morning. you might say that pg&e is buried under a pile of paperwork. you could equate the problem as facing searching for a needle in a hay stack. finding the right document that can prove it set safe gas pressure limits for the pipes, pg&e says it has brought in outside help to search more than a million records throughout 20 offices. they are searching through 1.25 million records. close to 300 people are on the job 24 hours a day seven day as week. the utilities commission has given pg&e until march 15 to find the records. if they are not found it may be forced to shut down for days to run tests to find weaknesses. the explosion here that killed eight people and wiped out dozens of homes happened almost exactly five months ago. next wednesday will mark five months. in addition to the paperwork problem, new gas leaks have been discovered close to where we are. coming up i'm going to tell you exactly where the new gas leaks have popped u

. >>> now to the san bruno pipeline blast and the skyrocketing cost of the clean- up. it now appears pg&e severely underestimated the tremendous toll of that deadly explosion and christin ayers says customers may end up paying for it. christin. >> reporter: that's right, sydnie. pg&e customers including some of the ones out here in the very neighborhood where the pipeline explosion happened possibly asked to pay for part of that ever growing bill as pg&e handles the disaster and consumer advocates told me they are vowing to fight that. no one thought handling the aftermath of the san bruno pipeline explosion would be cheap. >> we also expect to incur substantial legal costs related to the investigation, third- party claims and stow forth. >> reporter: legal fees are one thing you but not even pg&e thought pipe maintenance and testing cost would climb so quickly. >> the scope of the work to be untaken is not clearly known but it must be done. >> reporter: work that's going to cost money, to be exact $200 to $300 million for pipeline tests and other inspections, $220 mil

christin ayers is in san bruno with a look at the numbers, joins us now. good morning, christin. >> reporter: good morning, frank. it seems like the tab for the san bruno explosion just keeps growing and growing. and as you said, customers may soon be asked to foot the bill for the explosio last september. pg&e just announced its cost are far exceeding its estimates because of new tests and inspections addressing that deadly explosion. it's going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars more than the company originally estimated. that's in addition to the millions that pg&e is already forking over in lawsuits. let's take a look at those numbers. altogether, the tab could reach $763 million by the end of the year. that includes two to three hundred million dollars for pipeline tests and other inspections. add to that the $220 million the company set aside for lawsuits last year and an additional $180 million for lawsuits this year. the numbers have hit pg&e's bottom line. their profits plummeted 9.8% from last year so of course the question for consumers and

of course, we all know what happened here in san bruno last september.opefully, these findings will prevent it from occurring again. but there are hundreds of miles of natural gas pipeline in california run by pg&e and apparently they haven't been properly inspected. look at this pipeline. this has been in washington, d.c. since the pipeline explosion here in san bruno. it's been under the microscope. but it looks like it is too little too late. an audit of pg&e records shows that the company put off crucial inspections in high pressure transmission lines for more than two years. the california public utilities commission says pg&e also failed to follow its own safety guidelines to make sure inspections were thorough. now, that report by the puc was done in may well before the san bruno explosion. but the findings are only now coming out. the puc is supposed to oversee the utility but it has not issued a fine against pg&e for at least a decade. a pg&e spokesman says they realize the number of findings is unacceptably high but says, quote, we're moving on

number one, the san bruno explosion. what new did you learn? >> there are still a whole lot of questions after the september explosion which folks remember killed eight people and destroyed 38 houses. we're going to get a lot of answers in the next few weeks. there are federal hearings in washington, d.c. on march 1st. and the national transportation safety board, which has been investigating this, is going to come out with as many as five more reports. they came out with a report a couple of weeks ago that looked in great detail at the welds on the section of pipe that blew up. and that answered some questions about why it blew up but it opened a whole bunch more. when chris johns, president of pg&e, came to "the mercury news" this week we asked a lot of questions about that. the key about this mystery is what happened in 1956. because remember, this giant -- not giant but this major transmission gas line basically was coming down a hill in san bruno. there was a long straight piece down the hill, a flat piece on the bottom. and a very weird c

we are live in san bruno this morning. we learned that many haven't heard about the possibility of them picking up part of the tab. pg&e is facing a $367 million tab after the pipeline blast that turnrd homes into infer owes. even though they would pick up lawsuits filed by residents pg&e may ask state regulators to let the company pass along some of the expense to customers. the type of pipeline test and inspections that regulators are commanding are more costly than first expected. this year alone the costs are expected to between $200 and $300 million. it has sparked heated debate over who should pay for this. we asked residents what they thought about pg&e push to get cost emerge not shareholders to help with the cost. >> i want to live in a safe environment. again, if they are truly maintenance items that rate payers should participate in than i think it's fair and we should share the burden. >> pg&e has been a benefit for all of us in the state of california to be able to have our gas and electricity and that. i thin

pg&e repairing dozens of natural gas pipelines since the san bruno explosion. comes as the utility searches for the safety records of hundreds of other lines. >> amy live in south san francisco with more. amy? >> a couple big developments this morning, eric. first pg&e has found some gas leaks. some of them right here in south san francisco. the utility was ordered to inspect all of its pipelines after the september explosion in san bruno. they have now announced they found 21 gas leaks and three of those were right here in south san francisco. pg&e says it has repaired the leaks. the other big development. pg&e wants you to know it is looking for documents regarding its pipelines. it's looking hard. investigators have asked to see the documents after the blast. the utility couldn't find some of them. the documents will have details about the pipe that will help officials determine how much pressure to run through the lines. pg&e wants you to know it's dedicated 300 people to the problem. they're spending 24 hours a day 7 days a week scanning the documents, ind
