passengers on the caltrain going south bound in san bruno that she was talking about. flames are out. we have a reporter at the scene checking this out first hand for us. what are you seeing in the area, max? >> reporter: right now, just what we've got behind us is where the back of the train was. this appears to be a group of people who were on the train who are waiting for transport to get out of the area. the good news is at this point we are not hearing from thain.es from people on board that the ive trk that did get hurt and transported to the hospital. i was on the other side of the crime scene, the scene here where the front of the train was being hosed off by fire crews. the reason i am wearing this thick mask was because the fumes coming from that side were really something incredible. it was really strong to breathe in. over here on this side, it's not as bad. still waiting for more information on how this happened and hopefully no updates saying anybody on board the train was hurt. we'll stay and keep you updated with more information as we get it. >> thanks

san bruno, just after 10:30 this morning. caltrain providing several breaking updates in the past few hours. max darrow has been on the scene all day. i know a lot of things are changing, so what does it look like right now? >> reporter: right now the situation is under control in san bruno and now the beginning of a complex and lengthy investigation into how this crash happened is underway. let's give you a look at some of the scene. this video was taken moments after the crash this morning. the video was taken by a guy on the train and he jumped off of it. this is what he saw, flames and smoke billowing out of the caltrain. investigators say this is the aftermath of a crash that should not have happened in the first place. the caltrain struck two pieces of equipment that should never have been on the tracks in th 1 injured, including the train engineer and the person operating the equipment. seven people, including a handful of passengers, were taken to the hospital, bube oka. there were around 75 passengers on the caltrain

the scene of yesterday's collision in san bruno. it happened after a south bend commuter train rammed into construction equipment working on that track. >> is the feds try to figure out what went wrong, caltrain commuters now coping with service delays having to hop onto buses just to get to their destinations. kpix 5's max darrow is live in san bruno, keeping a very close eye on the early stages of this investigation. >> reporter: we are still very early on in the investigation, but you can see behind us a day after the fact, the caltrain is still behind us on the track in san bruno. we have seen investigators all around the site and in and out of the train. investigators climbed in and out of this caltrain today, including a team of six from the ntsb, after a fiery transgress in san bruno that injured 13 people. >> i am just glad everybody is safe. >> reporter: the southbound train crashed into three pieces of equipment on the tracks, which included vehicles and a crane. chopper 5 showing this construction truck equipped with what

they're in san bruno. this affecting this cow train that as you can see, again, this is the citizen app information and the video that's coming in to kron on could see how big that fire was, which kind of leads us to believe that the train struck that. truck and that ignited the fuel in the truck. so that's usually what causes that kind of fire above caltrain that dark smoke. that is usually from a gasoline. kind of situations. so again, we've got crews in place. they're going to the scene. they're going to give us the latest information we were hearing from the san bruno fire department. the chief saying that the tracks have been an electrified. so that means that the passengers could get out safely. they have been taken aside. the chief also saying that they had one immediate. so therefore and our normal language. that means that one person was seriously injured. that person has been taken to the hospital. there's no idea right now that was a man or a woman or the extent of the injuries. the fire chief,

that's just past the san bruno train station officials. say crews were in that area working on an electrification project and the train hit at least two separate vehicles on the track. we're told there may be a third vehicle under the train but investigator investigations are underway right now into that sky seven video shows two overturned and burn vehicles one is a crane truck. there were about 75 passengers on board the train when this happened and smoke started to fill the cabin the san bruno fire chief credited the conductor and others in the area for helping get people out safely. the train conductor was able to work to evacuate the train and that was critical in the success to make sure no one lost their life today really an important thing the incident occurred directly across the street from our public works yard here in the of san bruno and our public works folks actually were out there assisting evacuating the train as well, but prior to first responders even arriving on scene. right now, it's unclear how fast the train was goin
