the fort was built on top of the old seaport of brunswick. this was the leading seaport on the cape fear river in colonial times, in fact it was the first enduring settlement on the cape fear river. after the american revolution brunswick faded into oblivion and the entire site was sold for $4.25. twenty years later during the civil war confederate engineers picked to the site to build a line of artillery batteries to protect the western land approaches to wilmington and the river approach beginning in late march, they came here with a couple of companies of confederate soldiers and enslaved african americans and they started to clear the site and build the fort. the fort iran from cape fear river one and a quarter miles west westward to orton pond, this this was actually a lake 5 miles long and they used orton as a giant moat. general william t sherman's army captured savannah. after capturing, occupying and destroying to atlanta, general sherman marched his 60,000 men army the entire breadth of the state and captured savannah on december 21

i grew up in henry, brunswick and we studied history learned about the war.prior to the meeting, i meet with officials who were concerned something would happen. the sheriff, an african-american sheriff, and the local police chief, got together with our chancellor and talked about what might happen in the black community. what hapned a loof anonymous phone calls toe, the letters of the editor, speaking engagements that went away. i know there a was a couple of boards that met that are related to various places in wilmington who tried to figure out if they could sue me but everybody in the book was deceased so there was nothing there. i wrote this book as an untenured professor that the board was going to deny my tenure. it turned out it was owen king, one of the decenteds, who stood up for the diversity of the system and said you cannot do that. all that to say this was over a hundred years and in the past it resonates almost like what happened yesterday for many in the community. we have recognized this is now fully in the sunlight. not seeing this out as so
