brynn gingras is also here with me. the ntsb is on the scene.on the scene rescuing people. >> the scary part is we don't know the number of injuries. but you are looking at this video and seeing how this train, this car, at least this one car is completely crumbled. we can imagine there are extensive injuries. but we don't know how extensive. the train went right through the station and that's what caused this damage. we know that emergency responders are monitoring this for multiple injuries. multiple ambulances and multiple paramedics have been brought to the scene. also an urban search and rescue team deployed to assist in shoring up the structure. we talked about that particular station being one that was damaged during hurricane sandy. so this is -- also we're learning, okay, from the federal railroad agency is aware of this incident as well. and investigators are en route. so the fra is involved. we're hearing ntsb will likely be involved. that's all emergency responders tending to this and trying to figure out what happened. >> you contin

please stick around, mary schiavo and brynn gingras. it is 10:00 a.m. eastern time and we are following breaking news of a transit train crash in hoboken, new jersey that happened during rush hour. here's what we know. there are initial reports of more than 100 injuries. a passenger who was on board that train when it crashed just talked to me last hour. he says the very first train car was just demolished. the ntsb says it's gathering information, trying to determine what happened before it decides whether or not to launch its own investigation. let's get right back to cnn's brynn gingras to fill us in on what we know right now. >> again, 100 people injured, that's a lot of people. with this train that we know just crumbled. at this point we know there are a lot of agencies lending aid at this point. the federal railroad agency, ntsb, local law enforcement, local paramedics. we know a number of ambulances were sent to the scene to transport any of these injured people to hospitals. we can see there was a triage center set up right outside of that train

joining me now is brynn gingras. last night it was very differ t different.terms of the last few hours as we received this video from the scott family of the wife's vantage point to her husband being shot and killed does that change things tonight? what are the activists saying? >> we're not sure if it will change things. i was listening to you talk with don and the rest of your panel and analyzing that video and questioning is it a surgical glove, is it nothing at all and saying different cameras show different angles. and that's what's lighting up on social media is looking at that video and this was a big concern of police when they talk about not releasing any video because they want to show all the facts at once. this is what the scott family wanted. they thought transparency was important. so we're hearing what each person thinks and it's unclear what that will mean for tonight, peaceful protests last night but tonight could be a different story as people react to this video the first video made public between mr. scott and the police department. we kno

let's get the latest on the storm's path with brynn gringras on montauk.es behind you. they are awesome. >> reporter: they are awesome, alison. christine said last time stay out of the water. that is what the officials are saying although the beaches are closed on long island because of the waves. i will say we talked to a police officer 20 minutes ago. he said the waves don't look that impressive. although people do come here to surf. they are crashing further up on the shore. coastal flooding is also still a concern for those areas that are still in the tropical storm warning area. this is about an hour and a half after the low tide this morning. high tide comes at 11:00 this morning. that is when officials will keep their eyes on high tide. as the high tide comes in we could have flooding and that is what officials are prepared for. winds could gust up to 45 miles per hour. we have not seen that, but it could increase as the morning goes on. that is what the officials are dealing with in montauk this morning. >> it may look great, but dangerous out ther

cnn's brynn gingras live at the scene with more for you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.ere's some good news. the ntsb says they will take a look at that black box, download its data here on scene, not bring it back to washington, d.c. so certainly try to expedite this investigation process. that's just one piece of evidence that they have so far collected from the scene. they hope later today, this afternoon, at the earliest, to get into the front of the train that crashed yesterday morning during the morning commute and on that part of the train, that's where the conductor and engineer, rather, sits and they hope to get some video evidence, four cameras, two on the outside of the train and two actually at the control panel. they haven't been able to get to that just yet because of all that debris remember that fell on top of the train as it rammed through that station. some more evidence that they are hoping to get today, they hope to talk to the train's engineer. if you remember, he was pulled out unconscious from the train but has been released from the hospital. was

we have cnn's brynn gingras live from hoboken.ll get more information fast. >> reporter: that is a big part of the investigation. another big part, hopefully coming today, the ntsb says they're going to interview the engineer of the train, thomas gallagher. he was actually out of the hospital, overmedicated, couldn't talk to ntsb officials yesterday. that's the hope today. there were two other crew members on the train, so investigators hope to talk to them as well. and as far as evidence, of course, you mentioned that event recorder, that does measure about the speed and the braking system on the train. as you said, chris, very important information. other evidence that they hoped to collect but probably not until later this afternoon are cameras that were on the train. those are located in the front where the engineer sat. because of the debris that fell on top of the train, it has been difficult for investigators to safely get in there. so the hope is to get all that cleared up later today. and to get in there, get the four cam

brynn gingras live in montauk with more. >> we have some good news.o some official. we're almost reaching the point of high tide. and the water isn't coming too close to the coastline, so that's some good news. but you mentioned the danger here. it's those rip currents. you can see those waves crashing here on the shore. and also the barricades that are now in front of us. and lifeguards here on the shore as well. double reinforcement, to make sure no one goes on to the beach and certainly not into the water. you can imagine the frustration from some people since this is a surfer's dream right now, to get into those waves. we talked to some officials who have had to tell surfers to get out of the water, because that's the concern now as hermine sort of goes to the north at this point. but really, that's the danger, not to go into the water, those rip currents. but for the most part, a lot of people here just coming out with their cameras taking a look at it because not always getting to see waves this big and, really, this beautiful, carol. >> thanks

from montauk, long island, we have brynn. beautiful montauk, the storm hundreds of miles offshore.ge and rip currents is keeping most of the beaches closed, isn't it? >> reporter: exactly. that's what governor andrew cuomo insisted on because of the rip currents. they mean it when they say the beaches are closed. we have the barricades up, which doesn't allow people to take a picture of the waves. i am sure this girl wants to. double reinforcement, because you have the lifeguards standing here as well. it shows you how dangerous these rip currents are and how serious they are taking them. as we look out, you can see for yourself. the waves are crashing, from 5-12 feet high. at some point, the waves crash up on to the shore. that's why really these guys are keeping everybody off. you have to imagine this is a surfers dream. at one point, we talked to marine patrol. further down the coastline, they were actually having to take surfers out of the water, because they were too worried about their safety. another person was snapping pictures, if you can believe this, christine, taking a

our brynn gingras brings us to charlotte where another rally.nd i wonder if authorities had any trouble enforcing the curfew from midnight to 6:00. >> reporter: that's right, victor, that curfew started at midnight. at that time, the charlotte police department. tweeted they didn't have any problems and that the protests were peaceful. about two hours later, they said there were 75 people that weren't following the dispersal orders. they may have made arrests overnight. overall, it does seem that the protests were peaceful. there were protests on the highway, on the streets, but everyone was certainly following those orders. that is the good news. again, we're hearing from protesters that they are going to be here throughout the weekend, really. as they continue to say exactly what youlease those tapes. that's the focus of the protests. after the scott family released their own version of what happened. now, they want the charlotte police department to release the tapes, body cam footage and dash cam footage. we're hearing there are talks with s

. >> brynn gingras there for us in charlotte. let's try to get a question in about what and why. what does this video show. bring back tom fuentes. tom, when this video was released the department released a statement. i want to read a statement from the sentence. officer vin send perceived mr. scott's actions as an imminent threat to himself and the other officers. what imminent threat do you see in this video? have they released enough of it for you to answer that question? >> it's not a question of releasing 234u6, victor, it's a question of the angles of view don't really show his hands clearly enough to tell if he's holding the weapon and if he is holding it, what position it's in. but if that gun is in his hand and he disobeys about ten emphatic shouts from the officers to drop the gun and doesn't and his hand is moving around, it would take, you know, a tenth of a second to raise that gun and pull the trigger. even wild bill hickock wouldn't have enough time to stop it and prevent it. even if he's walking backwards, that bullet is going to come out of the gun at 700 feet p

brynn is live outside with more. how is security? >> you can imagine all the officers are under with the strain of the u.n. beginning today and the incidents happening both in new york and new jersey. that's why governor cuomo that an additional 1,000 national guard members come here to new york to assist the nypd which you already mentioned. they already boost patrols. around the city, the five boroughs, we'll see the strategic response teams, the critical response command teams. those are those heavily armed, well-trained officer os will be at major landmarks and subway stations and also just at random locations. speaking about the subways when people head to work this morning, they're going to be seeing a lot of canine units in those subways and more random bag checks and certainly a boost in security because, at this point, as we keep mentioning, there has been no arrests connected to the incidents that happened in chelsea. so, of course, everyone at this point, including everyone going to work, everyone in the city needs to rema

brynn gingras. comes back to one thing. positive train control. would have controlled the train no matter what the engineer was doing. >> a lot of questions about that. federal lawmakers coming out saying it should have had that. the ntsb will see if that would have played a factor with this particular crash. this is the first full day that the ntsb is on the scene investigating and so far they have been able to collect some evidence from the back of the train and that is an event recorder which registers the speed and braking of this particular train. they haven't yet been able to access the front of the train where the engineer sit. the engineer pulled unconscious from the train yesterday. the reason investigators can't get there because you saw all that video. the structural damage caused by this crash made it impossible and just simply dangerous for investigators to get to it and they want to pull video recordings from that area and they think, they hope they will get in there later this afternoon. that will tell them more answers to the quest

let's go to the ground, where brynn gingras is. >> reporter: there is still differing narrative evenbout what exactly unfolded on tuesday between police and scott. really, that's the big question that protesters want answers to. that's the big debate. when will the video be released, will it be released. as you said, the mayor has basically said first of all it's out of her hands. she doesn't make that decision. but second of all, it is part of an investigation so it is the state's decision to decide if it should be released. she says, though, if it can't be released in its entirety, as least maybe if we can quell some fear, some questions, rather, from protesters by letting some faith community leaders come and view it for themselves and let everybody know what that video says. she also cautions you know what, there's a lot to this investigation. it's not just about the video. there were witnesses there, there were other police officers there, so it's important that everybody look at the whole investigation in its entirety and of course, that's going to take a long time for it to be

thanks, brynn.'s see where hermine is now and why it was a beautifully sunny weekend here in the northeast. meteorologist chad myers joins us now to explain. chad, we had a beautiful day yesterday. weren't we supposed to have wind and rain and everything else? >> well, that was always that possibility. but this thing is still within the cone that the hurricane center put out on friday. it's about 150 miles or so farther to the east. because of that, didn't get the pushback with the cloud cover. obviously still big waves out there. i've seen some at 17 feet. the storm is still 70 miles per hour. it's still meandering out there. still going to be with us for a couple days. the waves are high, right onshore. the tides are about a foot and a half to two feet above where they should be. it's still forecast to get a little closer. no, it did not stay close enough to really get back into new jersey, to get back this water into the hudson river into the harbor, into staten island. that really didn't happen.

let's begin with brynn gingras on the breaking news out of charlotte. >> those dozen police officers hurt and several protesters were injured that unfolded on charlotte streets overnight. that anger spurred by the shooting death of keith lamont scott. the family says the father of seven was not and he was just in his car reading. overnight, violent protests erupting on the streets of charlotte, north carolina. >> hold the police accountable for what they do. >> reporter: several hundred protesters blocking a major highway, looting trucks and setting fire to some of their cargo. officers in riot gear deploying tear gas, setting off flash. throwing water bottles and rocks at the officer os, injuring at least a dozen. protesters moving to a local walmart. video shows them attempting to break in, but running when s.w.a.t teams arrive. >> the citizens have a legitimate concern and their concern shouldn't be taken lightly. >> reporter: the clashes breaking out following the fatal shooting of a black man, keith l lamont scott. they arrived at a complex to serve another individual when they

cnn's brynn gingras is joining us from new york city hospital where he was taken in.they know if they've begun questioning him or he's still being treated? >> reporter: he's still being treated. at this point the officials at the hospital are only confirming he's here at the hospital and being treated. we know he has not spoken to authorities or isn't speaking to authorities at this point giving up information. certainly, though, this is a center where part of the investigation, at least for the fbi, has been focused on as we've seen a number of authorities circling around this hospital and being very particular about who is allowed to enter this hospital at this time. of course we can deduce from the video you've shown your viewers when ahmad khan rahami was taken from the location to the hop on the stretcher, he had gunshot wounds to his arm and leg likely and also was alert. so, we do know that he probably is going to at some point be in contact with authorities. at this point he has not said anything to them, brooke. >> thank you. let me bring in former hostage ne

our brynn gingras is there for us.fficers who were injured taking the suspect in custody, how are they goindoing? what do we know about their conditions? >> reporter: one of the officers doing so well he's actually going to be released from the hospital tonight. that officer, angel padilla, 18-year veteran of the force. he encountered the suspect and according to police was shot at by the suspect. those bullets hitting his bulletproof vest. again, he's doing well and likely going to be released tonight. a second officer who the shot at according to police by the suspects is a 23-year veteran of the force, peter hammer. we're told he is doing well, but he's going to be held overnight for observation. police tell us the suspect fired at hammer as he was sitting in his patrol vehicle. those bullets ricocheting likely off of the windshield and hitting fragments of those bullets on his forehead and causing some grazing wounds. again, doing well, though. both officers received calls from president obama today, anderson, than

. >> brynn, thank you. >>> disturbing new details are emerging about ahmad rahami's history, including numerous visits to afghanistan and a taliban stronghold in pakistan. he then came back to the united states. pamela brown is "outfront" with the breaking details tonight. >> reporter: 28-year-old bombing suspect ahmad rahami bloodies as he's carried away on a stretcher moments after a shootout with police in linden, new jersey, a few miles from his apartment where his family lives above this chicken restaurant they run. the sound of gunfire captured on this amateur video. >> he's a very friendly guy. you'd never suspect this. i went there so much, he'd give me free chicken here and there. >> reporter: the family is from afghanistan, according to law enforcement sources. rahami was born in afghanistan and came to the u.s. in 1995, several years after his father arrives seeking asylum. he became a naturalized u.s. citizen in 2011. rahami went to high school in new jersey and attended middlesex college there majoring in criminal justice, but he never graduated. law enforcement officials

first let's get to cnn's brynn gingrass with more. >> reporter: in so many cases we do see video and at this point, there is no video that has emerged in this particular case, though it does exist. charlotte's police chief saying body cam footage, dash cam footage being reviewed as part of this ongoing investigation. not long ago we heard from charlotte officials. here's what they say happened. they said they were executing a warrant for another man at an apartment complex when they encountered 43-year-old keith lamont scott. authorities say scott got out of his vehicle and showed a hand gun, then got back in his car, and when officers approached, they say scott did not obey commands and got out of his car again, and that's when police fired, killing scott. the family says scott was a father of seven. they claim he was sitting in his car reading a book, waiting for his child to get off the school bus when this encounter with police happened. again, you heard from the police chief, very different narrative. they say that not only was a gun recovered off of scott, police say he did not
