budd: i don't.hose are things to keep to oneself, and you work to prevent it, but you don't need to make loose comments like that. you need to be very careful as president or as the next u.s. senator with how you speak about international relationships. judge beasley: the signal to the world came under president trump as he was cozying up to putin and knowing that russia was interfering in our elections, and also now we see what he has done to ukraine. the real question of democracy. with congressman budd aligning himself with donald trump, i think about threats to democracy and that certainly is one of them. we can't trust congressman budd to do what he needs to do to keep us safe. north carolina. rep. budd: under the prior president, not only was inflation at one point 4%, you could also buy groceries and gas in the same week. iran ran was in check. putin and russia were in check. china was in check. and so was north korea. so again, regardless of what you think about the prior president, we were

republican congressman ted budd faces shry beazley, a democrat.f to beery is the capital chief covering the race and he joins us now. from your vantage point on the ground, what is the state of this race right now? jeff: it is relatively sleepy if we are being honest. compared to 2014 and 2020 when at the time north carolina had the most expensive u.s. senate races in the history of the country. compared to the amount of spending we have seen in some other states, pennsylvania and georgia, it is relatively quiet. john: relatively sleepy this is a democrats the -- a race of democrats have high hopes for. why should they be hopeful for this race? jeff: this is as close to a 50-50 state as you are going to find in the country. it is slightly right of center, to be clear. but at the same time there is a two-term democratic governor here and the margins are such that we have seen some extremely close races. easily the democrat in this race lost a bid for state justice of the supreme court two years ago. there were millions of votes cast. she lost by 43

here you have one of the key states like north carolina, on labor day, the budd campaign was not evenn the air. unheard of. every candidate goes on the air on labor day in every state, even in kansas. this surprised me because i thought it would become a race. beasley has not come out of the blocks very well, the democrat running, and i think budd is a winner. just the flow of -- gerald: does the flow of money into the state suggest other people are drawing that conclusion as well? scott: mcconnell has put $30 million or $35 million into this race. gerald: he recognizes they are not going to run a competent campaign, so if anybody owes a debt to him after election day, it is ted budd. scott: they have raised half a billion dollars, and they have come in and rescued a bunch of these campaigns, and he is going to get a lot of credit. they have been very smart where they have spent their money. they are not chasing rainbows, they are putting the lead on the target, where they need to. gerald: what is that going to do to the trump-mcconnell relationship afterwards? is trump going to give

the matchup again is beasley versus budd, but let's show you the 2020 presidential election in northina. yeah, it was a trump state, it was close. remember, we did not call this thing for a long time in 2020. donald trump's margin was about 75,000 votes here, 1. 3 points. i think notably, that was down from 2016. in 2016, trump won the state by 175,000 votes, green happens, so democrats did not win north carolina in 2020, but they made progress, got a very close, and they made republican sweat. i think the backdrop in a way for the senate race in 2022, from the republican standpoint, they expect to hold a seat. this has been stubbornly close so far, for more on what is playing out in north carolina, nbc's antonia hylton joins us now from raleigh. a little bit more than two weeks to go to election day. we keep seeing polls that show a close race there in north carolina. what are some of the dynamics shaping the race, we should be looking for in the closing weeks? >> a, steve, north carolina will be really fascinating, and it's interesting to me just how much people have slept on this
