there's good reason for burger king and horton's to combine. it's good examples of business synergies, but there is a structure formulated for tax considerations. it's both. >> what is the benefit? if it was a tax benefit, why a company headquartered in the united states for all of its history choose not to be? >> well, remember that tim horton's was owned for a long time by wendy's. it's clear to see there's advantages to a company whose primary focus in the market is breakfast, with a company whose focus is on lunch and dinner. burger copying has had gaps in its breakfast preparation to the market. so tim horton's office a good business sip ergey with -- synergy with burger king. >> let's talk about the idea that studies say the u.s. stands to lose a lot of tax revenue, if the idea of inversions accelerates. others say it will accelerate unless the u.s. changes tax laws. what are the laws in question that need to be changed in order to stop companies from taking things. >> well first, let me talk about the way we are structured. the u.s. stan

the burger king behind me that's the gathering spot for this strike. see a few workers are already out here, but it's not scheduled to begin until after 6:00 a.m. now this time they say they're going to escalate their movement where their nationwide mantra is doing whatever it takes, that includes peaceful protests and many say they're prepared to be arrested, to fight what they believe in, fight for what they believe in. there's no official estimate on the number of workers that are expected to participate, but the strike includes workers from mcdonald's, burger king, wendy's and kfc, among many other famous restaurants. the campaign started in new york city where you guys are back in november 2012. well with 200 workers. since then we've seen 7 million low wage workers report a raise in their pay. right now, this strike is also riding the wave of president obama's labor day speech. in it, he mentions the campaign. he even cites them as evidence america quote/unquote deserves a raise. of course we're going to be out here all morning long monitoring ho

burger king will move to canada and cut its tax bill in half.nd has sparked plenty of proposed reforms. now on monday, treasury secretary, jacob lou will address these corporation inversions in a speech and could provide clues as to how the obama administration will approach the issue. but according to new research, anti-inversion policy proposals could push even more companies to foreign lands and put as many as 42,000 u.s. jobs at risk. gordon grey is director of fiscal policy at american action firm and joins me from washington. gordon this is counter intuitive to the message a lot of people are hearing about this. there are sort of two messages. one is that -- stop these companies from inverting and going elsewhere, or adjust the tax rate, lower, and have them stay. but you are actually warning if we did do anything to stop them, it will cost american jobs. explain how. >> sure. i think it's important to understand that we have a couple of things going on right now. one we have a broken tax code and that's what is driving a good deal of this

take a burger king. well, the sale of hamburgers doesn't involve a great deal of research, but the product that you're cooking at your store has been inspected for safety by the u.s. federal government. and the place where your store is located probably is on a highway or street supported by our government. but then there is one other element. the people who work in fast food in america aren't usually paid a lot of money. their income is supplemented by government programs like naps. it turns out to the tune of about $7 billion a year. that's what taxpayers in america pay to subsidize the income of workers in fast food restaurants. so here is a place like burger king that is using the largess protection rule of law in the united states to do their business, counting on our government to step in and supplement the income of the person frying the hamburgers and serving it and saying incidentally we're leaving, we don't have any obligation to this country to pay taxes. we're going to canada on paper. there'
