what's burning is a building that would have been half of that project, 172 units. it was going to be completed according to one contractor relatively soon. well, know the anymore. >> many of the apartment buildings around there and other buildings around there just recently finished, the goal of course of firefighters to keep this contained to this one building and away from the other ones. >> we appreciate the viewers checking in with us telling us especially the construction worker that was there who explained the bottom two floors are concrete and it's hard for me to see what, you know, what's burning and what's not. but the bottom two floors were concrete and then the upper floors were already rocked and ready to be taped and textured and so they were within probably a few weeks of being completed at least part of this building. still i don't know if san francisco fire -- they're good, but i don't know if they will ever find the cause of this. there's so much destruction there to go through this building and try to figure out what caused it, may be impossible.

during the early part of this past year, fires and intense wildfires burned across parts of the united states, threatening population centers and destroying hundreds of homes, and this winter, fires have already burned in western oregon, something that used to be very rare. the number of houses that have burned in our country from wildfires has increased a staggering 400% in just the last couple of years and it is projected to get far worse. in 2012, 40% of my home state of oregon burned in just one summer, and nearly 1.5 million acres burned across the pacific northwest. wildfires, of course, have always been part of life in my home state, but the fires in recent years are getting hotter and are significantly more threatening to homes. our country's top scientists say that the conditions that cause these recent fire seasons to become more severe, including drought accompanied by above average temperatures are now more common due to human induced climate change. over the past 30 years, the fire season has become two and a half months longer and both the number and severity of sylvester

you can see the flames burning out of an upstairs apartment unit.heard the commotion, came running out to see what was going on. some pulled out their cell phone to take video. one man from downstairs was said to have been knocking on people's doors to get others out. there was damage from inside two of the apartments damaged earlier this morning. basically, everything inside charred, appliances, furnl chur. still unclear how this fire started but we understand a fire investigator was brought in. early indications say the fire didn't appear to be suspicious. the man airlifted to a nearby hospital was the only person inside the apartment where it originated. by the time firefighters got there, he had minor burns to his hand and face but the more serious concern, he had respiratory problems as a result of the fire which is why he had to be transported immediately. we spoke to a person who shot the video and said the fire was pretty bad. >> you know, the people -- the guy sleeping in this apartment down here came out. it was really bad. >> reporter: no
