they quickly handed him backuffa to bwi tower. about five minutes or so to get himself set up. and you just saw hill now landing safely on runway 33 at bwi. he has rolled out all the way to the end. apparently no significant damage to the engine that we could tell at this point. but this is what we would call in aviation, a precautionary landing. because he struck so many birds so close to the ground, the pilot decided to err on the side of safety. they have a ground stop at this point. they have a couple of airplanes that are tracked -- stacked up, getting ready to take off. they cannot do so because of the number of dead birds that remain. it is unclear whether they were sea gulls or canadian geese, which were part of the new york incident. we'll stay on top of this and bring more back to you later. >> at least they're down on the ground. >>> let's check in with bob and a look at our weather. is. >> bright sunshine and low humidity. cool spot in ocean city -- oakland. 82 in cumberland. low to mid-80s. but very comfortable with l

an emergency landing at bwi.ike perry with the latest. >> reporter: yeah, around 5:15 this evening. southwest airlines jet 69 was departing runway 28 at bwi thurgood marshall airport. it hit about 40 birds. now, it appears that these birds were small, like starlings. but immediately after the bird impact, the pilot called the tower and requested an emergency landing. apparently not sure what the damage was or if there was any to the airplane, but it startled the captain of the airplane rather seriously. very short time, a bwi personnel handed them off to approach control, who advised everyone of the emergency. they basically stopped all of the traffic at the airportux while -- airport, while the flight was placed on a very long downwind. we know there were 169 people on board this southwest 737. apparently there were no injuries. that flight was destined for providence, rhode island. we know that people were off- loaded at the terminal and taken to another jet. the jet that struck the birds is being inspected for

it was bound for bwi, revealing a hole. flight 2294 took off from nashville yesterday afternoon when the hole opened up. the 737 had to make an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. no one was injured, but it was a terrifying ordeal for passengers. they were on board this flight when they noticed a frightening sight -- a one foot by one foot hole in the rear of the plane. witnesses say the hole was so wide they could see outside, and the cabin lost pressure. >> all of a sudden, the loudest noise i ever heard, came out of nowhere. there was no pop, no creek, no explosion-like noise. it was just a loud roar. took me a couple seconds to kind of wake up. got the baseball cap out of my face and i look up, and there's the sun. >> something you don't want to see on board. investigators don't know what caused the damage. however, southwest says it's inspecting all of its 737 300s as a precaution. those planes make up about 1/3 of the airline's fleet. >> new today, while you were sleeping, a small earthquake rattles one of

it played out on a flight bound for bwi. that's right, a hole ripped on in a southwest airlines aircraft. mid air. terrifying flyers who saw oxygen masks drop down over their heads. the plane made a safe emergency landing but the incident is raising some concerns about air travel and air safety. julie carrie with our story. >> reporter: some passenger as board southwest flight 2294 returned to baltimore with some frightening photos from their latest trip. this is their original plane, grounded after an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. a football sized hole clearly visible in the fuselage near the tail. the 737-300 took off from nashville with 126 passengers and five crew members just after 4:00 p.m. traveler michael cunningham was napping when an incredible noise woke him up. >> all of a sudden, the loudest noise i ever heard came out november where. there was no pop, no creek, no explosion like noise. it was just a loud roar. and took me a couple seconds to wake up. i got the baseball cap out of my face and i

eyewitness news is live at bwi thurgood marshall airport. mike hellgren investigates and has more on what is being done to prevent this from happening again. good evening, mike. >> reporter: good evening, kai. wjz has learned that the ntsb investigators have sliced the metal around that hole in that plane. and they're taking it to a lab in washington, d.c., and they're taking it for further investigation. and right now, the faa says there needs to be broader safety measures to protect the public. >> reporter: video captured inside flight 2294 shows the hole that opened at 34,000 feet. it's now the center of a federal investigation. otis and rechetta carol from randallstown were on that plane and were so frightened, they drove six hours from west virginia, where it made an emergency landing. these are pictures they took on board. >> it was an experience that, you know, you think about what you would do. but you really never know. >> until you're in the situation? >> until you're in the situation. >> reporter: this is not the first time the bo
