cnn's ana cabrera investigated all this.as latest from san bernardino. >> reporter: christine, we were learning more about the shooters in the massacre. we learned that both had been radicalized and had been for some time according to the fbi. they also tell us that both had been practicing target shooting at a local gun range. they had done so days before the shooting. authorities confiscated five guns. two pistols and three rifles. two were purchased by syed rizwan farook. two of the assault rifles were purchased by another man, enrique marquez. investigators interviewed him. he is not facing charges at this time. authorities say they don't know exactly how the guns ended up in the hands of the killer. the fbi is calling this a massive investigation and they are trying to be extremely methodical as they work to get answers. they collected 320 pieces of evidence. many of those sent to the fbi crime lab. they also interviewed some 400 people. contacts of the killers, including farook's parents who were both interviewed indiv

ana cabrera there for us in san bernardino. thank you so much. >>> let's talk to cnn national security analyst peter. how soon before they may make some of the information public? >> i'm not certain, obviously, if it's been at the bottom of the lake were whatever has been recovered, if it is related to the case will be damaged. that said, the fbi unit at quantico that works on electronics and computers can work miracles. the example of this was the mumbai attacks in 2008 in which 166 people were killed, the attackers left a gps on a boat that they were taking between pakistan and india. the fbi was able to find a ghost image to show that the boat originated in karachi, pakistan and gone across the ocean to mumbai, which obviously was an important piece of the investigation. it's not clear how long it will take. but clearly the fbi has great capacity to find what's on those computers. of course, crist -- christi, the question is who was syed farook reaching out to? and what exactly were the nature of his relationship with a cell

i want to bring in ana cabrera in san bernardino, and also justice reporter evan perez in on this, and ana, what is the update on the search? there are live pictures of the divers going in and out of the water. what are they looking for? >> briana, this search resumed an hour ago and the dive team coming in about daybreak geared up. and now in the water, two divers and at times they will come up, and right now the two are underwater which is why the water is looking glassy behind us. they are working slowly and methodically looking for any kind of evidence that might be linked to the san bernardino shooters. now you can see the water here as we pan down is pretty dark. it is murky. and it is full of debris. we have seen the divers take out trash at times, but we have not seen them come up just yet with anything that looks like evidence that they want to hold on the. the fbi assistant director yesterday telling us that this could be a search that takes days here in the water. this is a couple of miles north of where that shooting took place last wednesday, over a week ago now, and they

cnn's ana cabrera joins me in san bernardino, california. but first evan perez, what stands out to me so much is that no one in law enforcement on a local or federal level saw one red flag on this couple. now, you know, in a week's time investigators are learned all this information about the path to radicalization, especially since the attack, but with no hard drive to work off, per se, and smashed cell phones. so how do they do that? >> reporter: there a lot of information the nsa and other organizations are able to collect. the problem is it's very difficult to flag this stuff in realtime. you have to go back after something like this, after something goes boom, you go back and see what was in the collection that intelligence agencies have. and we know the nsa collects a lot of personal communications overseas. that's one way that these people would have been able to be flagged at least. but again, you have to know what you're looking for. and it's clear now, poppy, from what the fbi director said that going back to at least 2013 when he

cnn correspondent anna cabrera is with me now.e they given up on finding that missing hard drive? >> reporter: no, fred. they're still hoping to find the missing hard drive. that seems to be a crucial part of the investigation. however, we are told according to my colleague evan perez talking to law enforcement source, they tre're trying to g the data from internet service providers keeping records of activity linked to ip addresses to trace back to the killers. that is an option in terms of trying to put together the footprint, fred. >> all rightment let's focus on the female shooter, tashfeen malik, "the new york times" saying she posted on social media she supported jihad and wanted to participate in on that and the protocol doesn't include checking social media. what more of you learning about that scenario? >> reporter: law enforcement officials have told that cnn that malik made it through at least three background checks or security screenings prior to getting her visa and simply no red flags even going into the interviews

anna cabrera joins us with the latest. the fbi holding a press conference. what did you learn?rter: we're learning a lot more about the killers. while they don't know exactly who radicalized who, they do believe both had been radicalized and had been for quite sometime they said and also told us that both tashfeen malik and her husband syed farook had gone to shooting ranges here locally and had practiced target shooting, in fact, most recently just days before the shooting. investigators confiscated five guns, two pistols, three were rifles, three guns did belong to syed farook and the other two guns we now know were purchased by a man named enrique marquez. investigators don't know exactly how those weapons ended up in the hands of these two killers. they are calling this a massive investigation and say they are working extremely methodically and collected 320 pieces of evidence, many sent to the fbi crime lab in virginia and interviewed more than 400 people including farook's parents. they were both interviewed for several hours we know and the authorities here locally are r

let's get over to ana cabrera. tashfeen malik made it through multiple checks before getting into the united states. how were her true intentions missed? what are you hearing? >> reporter: that is the big question this morning. and that's what intelligence officials are trying to determine as they're digging into the past and trying to put together a timeline of radical radicalization for tashfeen malik and her husband, sayed rizwan farook. she was never asked about her jihadist views or any jihadist leanings during her consular interview last summer. she was interviewed in pakistan as one of the last steps of the visa applications. she came to the u.s. on a fiancee visa in july. this was back in may. she had already passed some security clearances and background checks with the department of homeland security. and when that happened, there weren't any big flags that were raised. as a result, the consular interview was really focused on asking questions to see if her relationship with sayed farook to be married or

anna cabrera is "outfront." >> reporter: investigators had interviewed more than 400 people includingy members. among them farook's mother who was detained for almost seven hours by authorities before being released. his father was questioned by police. spoke briefly with reporters at his home in corona, california, indicating he didn't agree with some of his son's beliefs. >> all pakistanis coming from the major cities are liberal people. he was -- >> he was going towards what? >> reporter: he was more specific in the interview with the italian newspaper. syed farook admitted his son talked about terrorism and isis. saying who does not talk about it these days? he said he shared the ideology of al baghdadi to create an islamic state and he was fixated on israel. when asked if he had contact with terrorists abroad, farook said i do not know, but these days who can say with the internet and all this technology? the digital footprint could be key, but tracking that is proven difficult with the hard drive missing and cell phones apparently destroyed. other clues could come from farook's

. >> ana cabrera, thank you so much. let's get more on these developments.'m joined now by cnn law enforcement analyst and former fbi assistant director, tom fuentes. thanks so much for joining us. so we don't know exactly what they have found, what they may have even retrieve. earlier you said, you know, if it does mean like the hard drive or anything electronic, there's a pretty good possibility you could still retrieve information. let's talk about what kind of credible information investigators must have had to even go to this lake and feel fairly confident they might locate something there, because this couple has recently been there. >> fred, it could have been as simple as a neighbor saw this black suv, at the time, didn't think anything of it, until later, watching the news, they see that that vehicle or a vehicle resembling that vehicle, had been close to that lake. and it could as simple as that. it doesn't sound like they have area video cameras or traffic cameras that might have spotted the vehicle or spotted them personally, but sound like maybe

let's get to cnn's ana cabrera on the ground there in san bernardino. what is going on at that lake? what are you seeing there? what are you hearing from investigators? >> well, i'll let you take a look over my shoulder here. you can see fbi agents have arrived on scene. it's much earlier on the west coast. they just arrived within the hour and are preparing to go in the water. we know several divers were in yesterday for a few hours, looking for evidence, we're told, that could be connected to this couple who were involved in the san bernardino attacks. now, investigators say they're following a couple of leads they received that put the shooters in this park near the lake on the day of the shooting. they aren't saying what specific evidence they're hoping to find, only they'll take anything they believe may be connected to the investigation. as you pointed out, that hard drive from the couple's computer. presumably that's something nair looking for. another new development, we found out farook could have ties to the terror cell busted in california he

anna cabrera joins me now live from san bernardino. what when you look at her, tashfeen malik, "the new york times" report is disturbing, right? she passed three background checks by u.s. immigration officials and yet none of this came up, anna. >> reporter: and that's because they didn't check her social media accounts. it was not part of the screen process coming these ky-1 if fiancee visas and missed it apparently according to "the new york times" social media postings made openly talking about support of violent jihad, wanted to participate in it and made no effort to hide her support and her views according to "the new york times" report and citing some sourceless here in the u.s. law enforcement area. now, we have learned that that visa process is something that's very much under scrutiny right now. the obama administration ordering a thorough review and also learned that they have in the past few months, state department has included social media communications as part of the security screenings of applicants of certain countrie

ana cabrera tells us what investigators may be looking for. >> reporter: divers have spent days combingg for any evidence connected to the killers, tashfeen malik and syed farook. divers have found a number of items in the lake, although fbi officials aren't confirming what the items are, nor whether they can confirm if they have to do with this case. one fbi official telling me they find a lot of stuff because this is a public lake. they have to do further investigation to determine whether it is part of this investigation. but we have learned a little bit more about how they're conducting this search. it is slow and methodical. they have specialized equipment that protects them and helps them to see under this water because of extremely dark and murky water. it's deep, up to ten feet deep in places, we've learned. these divers are trained professionals and they're doing a grid search to leave no stone unturned. we do know that tashfeen malik and farook were in this area on the day of the shooting according to what authorities have said on the record. they say they got a tip that led t
