in california, most people -- in california, what we know, we're looking at stats like you're more likely to be injured in a car accident on a daily basis than an earthquake. but the problem in california is injury and economic disruption. we're seeing that with some of the events infolding right now in ridge crest where the shaking was intense, around that area. a strong severe kind of shaking. >> dr. lucy jones talked about how we should not be surprised by this but some people might be because it's been a very quiet time. the last earthquake of this magnitude was 1994. california has not experienced the level of earthquakes that they have in the past. if these aftershocks come in and somebody feels that rolling, thunderous feeling and they're inside, what should you do? >> drop, cover and hold on. immediately you drop on your hands and feet. cover your head and neck. if there's a sturdy table to get under, crawl that that and hold on. that's what that means. it's an adaptable modifiable method. if you're driving, set the parking brake. make sure you're not near a bridge or power line.

on your screen, ridgecrest, california.ah snider our correspondent in los angeles. we've been learning the ridgecrest regional hospital is now being evacuated. >> reporter: it's the only hospital really for that region. this is significant event. it is being evacuated according to the fire department which just put out an alert it is being evacuated. we should mention it's been around since like the 1940s, so the building may be a bit older than some of the other buildings in the area, but it is being evacuated at this time. the main hospital there in the ridgecrest and surrounding areas. it's significant having to take patients out at a time when there are also after shocks happening every few seconds or minutes there in ridgecrest. we now know there are at least 58 after shocks that have happened since the main event of the 6.4 earthquake that happened there, and the epicenter was the ridgecrest area. so now we are hearing the hospital is being evacuated as these sort of rolling after shocks are going on there. very scary
