southern california is going to bear the brunt of this system., mainly in the mountains of northern california and the high sierra, that is where the bulk of the activity will be concentrated once again tomorrow. the fog will be spreading tonight and backing up to the coast by midday. pop up showers in the usual locations on saturday but by tomorrow afternoon and evening, the first waves of moisture are going to be moving into southern california already and bands of heavy rain are going to be moving in throughout the day on sunday. some of the heaviest rain is going to be falling inland in the desert locations, where the landscape isn't capable of absorbing nearly that amount of rain, that significantly heightens the flash flooding threat, mudslides are going to be a concern and there's enough wind energy with this decaying tropical system that power outages are going to be a threat as well. the moisture will lift up to the north, avoiding the bay area, just enough for that chance of pop up showers on monday , but it is a 10% to 20% chance. outs

much of southern california is getting a heavy soaking right now. three inches of rain architected tonight. flood warnings are in effect for los angeles county. los angeles authorities are scribbling to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters. airlines have canceled about a thousand flights that were supposed to be heading into or out of the area and the l.a. unified school district announced this afternoon that all schools will be closed tomorrow, and allstate beaches in san diego and orange counties are closed as a precaution. matt rivers is in san diego with more on hillary. >> as tropical storm hilary bears down on southern california, millions of people in the storm's path are facing potentially catastrophic and life-threatening conditions. >> this storm is expected to have significant impacts within the area. which will include flash flooding, coastal flooding, and erosion. dangerous rip currents and high seas. >> california under a state of emergency, hillary is the first tropical storm to hit the state since 1997. >> our message t

take a look at the storms impact across southern california. palm springs picked up 75% of his annual rainfall in just 12 hours on sunday. they had just over three inches of rain downtown, swamping streets and pushing flood channels to capacity. towering over the desert peak, they had 10 inches of rain. even the land of little rain in owens valley had more than 2 1/2 inches. take a look at this video out of riverside county. last night around 1:00 ama drone video shot , showing floodwaters that breach the city is intersections have been turned into rushing rivers. you could see people standing on roofs of cars and buildings. just waiting to be rescued. if the rain was not bad enough, the ground was shaking. there is a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the storm. the u.s. geological survey says the quake was followed by several aftershocks. so far, no reports of major damage or injuries. michael spencer is in san clemente tracking the impact of that storm. actually, we will get to max darrow as the rains are reaching las vegas. he is rep

california is watching as hurricane hillary fast approaches and it could reach southern california tomorrow. a tropical storm has not hit california since 1939. this is huge news. let's get to first alert meteorologist, jessica birch with where the storm is now. >> absolutely, as you said, this is huge, i will say this, that was just a tropical storm, right now this track is expected to hit california as a category one. let's take a look at what is to come. starting off with hurricane hillary, just south of baja california this afternoon, we are in a category four, that is 157-mile-per-hour wind to be a category five, so to put that into perspective, this is a very strong storm tracking its way to the north. here is the track right now, we will continue to see this develop, right now it is moving its way to the north, just around southern california, look at the colors on the map, as it moves to the north, it will start to lose energy. the warm sea service temperatures are needed to survive. that still gives it enough strength to hit los angeles, san diego area, and a category one as early

but southern california and central interior california will probably be pounded with the devastatingflooding and excessive rainfall here. we might just get a few showers and that's about it. here's a look at the latest. and the storm is still a category two hurricane just off the west coast of baja, california, moving north, of course, by 11:00 tonight, it should be down to a category one hurricane. still a powerful storm, of course, and a major rain producer expected to make landfall tomorrow morning just before noon around the san diego area. but it's going to pound all of southern california and up into the central sierra and over into western nevada as well. we're talking about many of these locations receiving anywhere from 5 to 7in of rainfall in the hardest hit area. so you can see what the rainfall that the rainfall potential is, excessive. and that kind of rain, of course, can produce devastating flooding. meanwhile, back here in the bay area, we're just looking at some breezy conditions, having nothing to do with the hurricane. we've got gusts up to 24mph here in san franci
