. >> reporter: walter wallace with caltrans is our tour guide to top a two exit stretch of 280. the spot of brand new bridge hinge will be carefully put in place. relieving the duties of an outdated and overworked hinge that served the bay area for 50 years. >> the bridge is in a solid piece and like most people think it's actually a moving part and it allows for flexibility and mobility of the bridge. >> reporter: we can't show you the actual hinge because it's packed in reinforced concrete but i can tell you the old hinge was only about 6 inches long. the new one will be 2 feet. caltrans says the new hinge will make the bridge safer for many thousands of daily drivers and also meet new tougher standards for earthquakes. >> this new hinge will be seismically safe and as i stated before it's going to be at a higher standard. >> reporter: this project is said to be on schedule to finish before tuesday morning's commute. then crews move to its northbound twin to replace three more hinges. that will happen over the fourth of july and labor day weekends. in san francisco, brian webb
