but caltrans gave the okay to open up those lanes at 2:00 this morning. it had been shut down since thursday night and caltrans crews worked constantly to replace a bridge hinge so that the roadway would be safer in case of an earthquake. the work was so extensive that caltrans shut down about two miles of the highway from king street to pennsylvania avenue. >> it's been a very challenging project. they had to bring in crews from other projects just to make sure that we made the deadline. >> reporter: in order to replace that hinge, caltrans had to divert the roadway and that meant a lot of noise and dust for nearby neighbors not a mention a little bit of extra time for drivers passing through. but overall it was not as bad as people anticipated especially with different events over the weekend including a few giants' games but the good news it will be an easier commute this morning for the 60,000 drivers who use that step of highway 280. back to you in the studio. >> all right i guess they have a lot of work done but not done quite yet. what else? >> rep
