bob hos is joining us from caltrans this morning. can you give us an update on the road conditions out there preparing for the storm as well as el nino. >> statewide we've hired another 800 workers just for the winter season because we know we have a lot of work out there to do to make sure we're prepared. the big thing we have to do is our crews go out there and clear as many storm drains as possible. leaves and mud are the usual problem, but also litter. yet another problem caused by litter is they plug storm drains. if you have a roadway that's flooded during a rainstorm and you can't get through, chances are you can thank a litter bug. we have to make sure the pump houses are working in low lying areas. pump houses pump the water away. >> in terms of the 800 workers, excuse my ignorance, are they temporary workers? >> temporary, seasonal workers. >> specifically for the wintertime and el nino? >> that's right. >> we talk about the advice for drivers, make sure your tires are good. but what do you want to tell drivers out there wh

caltrans busy out there trying to get this out of the road.happened was a big rig and box truck crashed. that big rig was carrying debris and sinned blocks. it was scattered all over the connector road there and some vehicles also hit it so that kind of dragged it even further. it's causing a backup now as you work your way through there. eastbound 80 we are seeing some delays westbound of course as that morning drive heats up but right now what is shut down is east 80 connector to westbound 580 so trying to get to the richmond/san rafael bridge is going to be difficult commuting out of the east bay this morning. use central as an alternate. that will be your best bet in the meantime. and again we'll let you know when all those lanes open up. westbound 80 though at highway 4, we have reports of an accident blocking the left lane. that's causing delays as well as you work your way through there. once you get past that you hit the bay bridge and that's backed up into the maze. 27 minutes now carquinez bridge to the maze for the eastshore freeway

first reported as a paint spill and then chp, caltrans, got on scene.ll us some type of a try wall compound that was spilled across multiple lanes of west 80. at this point it is just the right lane that is open right now for westbound 80 approaching fremont street in san francisco. we have had long delays since then backed up across the bay bridge. you are looking at the logjam now at the macarthur maze in oakland. a lot of folks didn't get worth in time. now they are stuck in the traffic. i'm sorry. that's the bay bridge toll plaza. they are sitting in those delays again one hour and 40- minute delays leaving oakland getting into the city. now, i want to talk about some of your alternates. you can certainly take 880 over to the san mateo bridge. the san mateo bridge is the in good shape. there is more traffic there for westbound 92. and looks like that traffic is extremely slow just on the span itself. 880 is still rolling well through oakland and hayward heading for the san mateo bridge. but it is certainly having a big impact. also on local transit.

caltrans crews brought out a sweet stripper -- street sweeper but it wasn't enough. a worker in the pickup truck drove over the spill very fast and hit the brakes to test if there any traction on the pavement, but it was still too slick. that is when caltrans drops in on the roadway and used a street sweeper to drive the same into the pavement.@6:30, it worked. all lanes past fremont street exit were reopened. the damage was already done. miles away and hours later there was still a huge backup in emeryville as cars were still heading to the toll plaza. >> many people watched us in the morning, paid attention to our advice and avoided the bay bridge and chose other bridges in the bay area. but they weren't much luckier. those people were joined by other people avoiding the bay bridge. it was a tough commute -- all the way around.>>> here, we told you about the traffic mess when it first started to unravel at 4 o'clock this morning. what we are seeing right now is all of the traffic that is heading toward san francisco is being forced off here at fremont street becaus
