those on capitol hill learn the same things about gerald ford. he was a hard worker, he kept his word, he was a good listener he had a sharp mind. and that leadership on capitol hill and congress and among the congress rewarded him with important positions early in his career. 1950 when the appropriations committee. by 1953 into a majority. he has given charge into the image on the right military personnel, the dnc in south korea. it's during these early days of the cold war with bases in the pacific and europe he is traveling, attending to the army's needs, reporting back to capitol hill and help track their budget. 1956 he was given oversight. in a 1957 his place on the select committee helped draft the legislation. in 1963 lyndon johnson reaches out to him as one of two members of the house of representatives. but that the commissioners on the committee that's investigating the assassination of president john kennedy, the warren commission. we go to the next slide to use his own phrase he was going to be a workhorse, not a show horse. not some

the hard work that he did on capitol hill had a toll. he's often known also as having the all american family. and indeed, in many respects, he does. but we all know that all american families also had, at times, problems, challenges. mrs. ford was raising four kids in the middle of the 1960s, the turbulent 1960s. and yet, her husband is gone so much, by the time he moves into leadership, and earns the minority leadership position in 1964, he could be gone over 200 days of the year, promoting the republican agenda and campaigning for republican members of congress. that was hard on her. when she began to speak, getting a larger platform as the first lady -- she was open about the psychiatric help that she sought in parts of the 1960s to restore a sense of her self, and how effective that was. it's not all rosy, there are challenges. the fords have to go through those, but they tackle then and they move on. so, if we go to the next slide, ford still seeking that speakership, and by 1964, the republicans took a shell lacking on capitol hil

i've heard even sooner, potentially, from capitol hill leadership. and the lack of urgency it seems in the opposition process. if we are really looking at that time frame, why are we stockpiling that initiative today? why are we buying more things right now? maybe two or three cycles before 2027, so what do you make of that disconnect? does dod not see the challenge or is it pure, bureaucratic inefficiency? >> i think it is an excellent question. you know in the end that china is our biggest threat. a nuclear competitor and that we have to be ready to deter them and if necessary, fight them. how would you compare china and russia? and are we really ready? if we act now, will we be able to deter china? >> there is a mat in the index that talked about nato member country spending. what you find is the people in the countries that are closer to russia approach the defense spending more seriously. the further away you are geographically, or the more distracted you are with more social spending at home, the lower those levels are. the challenge with the u
