capitol in washington. capitol was constructed from 1922-1932. up next, a conversation on the design of the building. mr. ripley: we are currently on the 14th floor of the tower, which is about two thirds of the height of the tower. the tower is 400 feet from the ground to the top of the solar's head. the nebraska state capitol was built over the 10-year period from 1922 until 1932 in four separate stages of construction. bertram goodhue secured the commission to design the state capitol as the result of a national competition. he did three rather remarkable things in the design. it was his first opportunity to be set free to do his own major commission under his own design and design concept. prior to the nebraska state capital it was very typical that ols werete capit designed after the primary design prototype, which was the u.s. capitol. and he was the first to depart from copying the federal capitol. he created a building that had building instead of a offour equal sides, instead building two long walls and two short ones, a shoebox design.

wagner: this is the archival collection for the nebraska state capitol. we house the architectural materials related to the design and construction of the present state capital. one of the things that makes our building unique is the fact that we have this amazing collection of materials that document the construction of the building. when the decision was made that nebraska needed a new state capital, the legislature put together a commission to oversee the design and the construction of the building. the commission put together a competition to select an architect. the unique part about this competition was it was a double-blind competition. so, the competitors did not know who the judges were in the judges did not know who the competitors were. the advantage to this process was the architects could design to the specifications that were put in front of them instead of designing to the known taste of the judges. they were able to come up with solutions they might not have normally. the winning design was very unique. it had a tower instead of the tradit

i look out and see something we face on capitol hill. i can speak from the capital perspective of the pope's speech to congress. this will be very, very different. if i had to describe the significance or importance of his speech this is going to be like a had a state visit on steroids in terms of demand for media, in terms of demand for members of congress to actually be in the chamber for the pope's speech. congress, people can claim congress doesn't do a lot but i think last week they managed to vote, x. member of -- profit all the seats will be filled with members of the house and senate. they normally when heads of state visit even with prime minister netanyahu's speech a couple of month ago you had what they called filler. unit staff members were interned filling seats. i will not happen this time around. i doubt there will be a member of congress who would not want to skip this. for our selfish purposes in terms of covering this, this is going to challenge for reporters who want to cover this speech. again going back to state of t

that is what it looked like above the capitol building that day, and it still flies above the capitol building today. weitzel has to get a telegraph off. it says we took possession of richmond at 8:15 this morning. telegraph goes to news services in the east, and weitzel becomes an overnight hero. they are celebrating in the streets of new york, philadelphia. washington, as word spread that richmond has fallen. the papers begin to announce that richmond is ours. what an irony that is to see freed slaves wearing the blue uniform much into the capital of the confederacy. weitzel enters the rebel capital yesterday morning. weitzel's negro troops occupy the city. general weitzel occupies his mansion in richmond. as the advanced team goes in, they give word that the confederate white house has been set aside by president davis under special orders that it should be given as a residence to the union general. they don't know who it will be, but it happens to be weitzel. weitzel and shepley show up at the confederate white house, greeted by the housekeeper who says president davis left in suc
