in february, capuano was up by 12 points. this august, just a few weeks ago, he was up by 13 points. she got people out that don't typically vote. she's a city councilperson in boston. and even though she was part of the political establishment, even though he was a far left by american standards, a progressive, liberal democrat, she was able to best him by getting people out with the campaign slogan that change can't wait. she wanted a bolder campaign. tonight, she talked about doing this not only for women, but for african-american men behind the wall in prison, for immigrants. here's a little of how she addressed the crowd tonight when she thanked michael capuano for making her a better candidate. >> mike capuano is unapologetically himself. on many occasions throughout the years when there was a strike or a rally, i would find myself sharing a stage, a microphone, or a bull horn with him. and, well, he forced me to bring my best, just like in this race, and i thank him for his 20 years of service. >> reporter: certainly,

number one, michael capuano, you say ten terms.of it this way, in 1998 when he was elected he won a ten-way democratic primary with 22% of the vote. never faced a serious challenge after that. and then this year lo and behold, city councilor from boston, ayana pressley runs against him. there were not huge ideological differences in this case. she certainly positioned herself as being more aggressively anti-trump than capuano but a lot of this too had to do with the changing demographic character, the changing political character of this district. how about this? the history of this seat, this is a historic seat in congress that capuano has held. here is the lineage. james michael curley, john f. kennedy, tip o'neill, joe kennedy ii, michael capuano, and now this will be the first african-american woman ever to represent massachusetts in congress. ayanna pressley. this is an overwhelmingly democratic district. by winning this primary she is as good as elected in november. from tip o'neill and james michael curley, the democratic pa

i think mike capuano certainly surprised.nd the reason, a lot of this has to do -- it's the state of the democratic party right now. what democrats are looking for in this district and nationally. but it's also this. this district, it's a big portion of the city of boston. the other big piece of this is the city of summerville, massachusetts. michael capuano was the mayor of summerville before he went to congress. he got elected to congress 20 years ago. the reason he won that democratic primary in 1998, he won the city of summerville that year by 45 points over his nearest competitor. how much has summerville right outside boston, used to be half young professionals, half working class, that was always sort of the mix, it's been changing through the years. tonight summerville is 50-50, between ayanna pressley and mike capuano. why did he concede so early? he saw those numbers out of summerville and said it's not going to get any better for me in boston, another parts of this district. you see pressley running away with it. j

is it that they're not -- kw capuano is not progressive enough? what is the actual complaint?: i don't know if i've heard the not progressive enough argument made here, but this is a district that has gotten more younger and racially diverse. presley is a black woman and she would be the first black woman to have this congressional seat if elected so i think there is an argument among presley supporters that the district is changing, the demographics are changing and they might want someone who reflects physically what their experience has been and her experience has been growing up here. so i think that is the beef, so to speak, in this race. that being said, capuano supporters would be the first to tell you that they feel like he is progressively in line with where they would like him to be on policy in d.c. as well as bringing home the bacon for his constituents here in boston and the surrounding areas. >> this will be a great race, we'll watch it closely tomorrow. thanks for reporting on it for us. >>> coming up, anticipation is building as the window closes this week for
