we will be back with our interview with the archbishop of new york, cardinal anthony dolan. as we were planning our broadcast this morning on religion and politics in america, one of the first people we went to was the cardinal timothy dolan, the archbishop of new york. as you are going to see, it was a lively conversation. >> happy'se easter and passover. >> let me start with this. how would you define the state of religion in america today? >> good. i think religion is vibrant. it is growing, the stats show us, as you can imagine, particularly as to what the data shows us about the catholic faith in the united states the numbers are up, the commitment of the people is strong, that doesn't mean, bob, we don't have a lot of problems, we do, and we bishops, as any other pastor have to treat those problems realistically so we do have people leaving, we do have people disenchanted but in general it is good news. >> schieffer: how would you rate the state of the catholic church right now? you have been through some really tough times with some of the -- >> we have, we have. yes,

cardinal timothy dolan says the less war on religion isn't made up.life of the church. our problem is the government is intruding into the life of faith and in the church that they shouldn't be doing. >> steve: and on this easter monday, fox news legal analyst peter johnson, jr. joins us live. >> good morning. you know, cardinal dolan, i think, has pinpointed the hypocrisy of the president's alleged embrace of constitutional rights, although the president wants to create new rights for some groups and some folks and for some of his programs, not enumerated by the constitution, the first amendment is not respected. what cardinal dolan is saying, along with other leaders like rick warren and ann graham and many other people from many or sects across the country, that it's not about religion getting in the way of government. it's about government getting in the way of religion. it seems to be kind of a mantra of the obama administration constitutional rights go by the boards to favor political rights, to favor political expediency in an election year. >>

cardinal dolan from new york was on "face the nation" with bob schieffer and said three things i findah it wasn't so bad. actually, a lot of good has come out of this. >> the eyes of faith, we always know that difficulties can purify us and strengthen us and we're seeing that. for instance, we got a slight increase in vocations to the priesthood and the young men coming in will say it is really the tough times it is really the scandals that almost inspired my vocation because i saw the need for virtuous, hard-working priests and a catholic church that's reinvigorated. i want to be part of that renewal so god can always bring good out of bad. i think that's what we're seeing out of the church. >> bill: tell of the men who were abused of boys that this is good for the church and by the way, he's -- only reason those churches today have priests at all is because the american church is importing priests from africa and india and other parts of the world. second thing that the cardinal said, he said he agreed with rick santorum about john f. kennedy. remember a month or so ago santorum sai
