francis will hold a prayer service alongside cardinal dolan on thursday. today i caught up with the cardinal who said he is ready for the pope's visit. >> all along he avoided visiting the united states, saying that's where the rich people are, i prefer to be among the poor. what do you think he'll learn? >> one thing i hope he will learn is we have a lot of poor here. not only materially poor, but spiritually poor. as mother teresa said, that's the worst kind of poverty. >> just two days before the pope's visit, cardinal dolan told me he's a little bit nervous and feels like the father of the bride and wants everything just right. thursday he'll be doing vespers at st. patrick's cathedral. >>> the holiest day on the jewish calendar yom kippur. here you can see worshippers arriving on fifth avenue at the temple where services are under way. and security is tight where they are preparing for their day of atonement. the holiday is about fasting and seeking forgiveness. the nypd promises the pope's visit will not leave synagogues unprotected the unprotected. t

accompanied by cardinal dolan, the pope laying a rose at the edge of the pool.these are reflecting pools with f waterfall features that reflect the footprint of the twin towers. a very, very powerful place to visit. ann thompson has been traveling with the pope and is on the phone right now. he's moving ahead of schedule. what is the plan here? >> lester, he just shook hands with former new york mayor michael bloomberg. he is going to meet with 20 family members of victims here at 9/11 then he will go inside for that interfaith service. but what's interesting about this visit is this is a visit that pope francis insisted on making. when they originally made up his schedule for the visit to new york, ground zero was not on it. and the organizers thought because benedict had been here that pope francis didn't need to visit and pope francis today the organizers "where is ground zero? i want to go to ground zero." it's very important to him for several reasons. one, he always says he wants to accompany anyone who is suffering and we talked with some of the family me

thank you for joining us again cardinal dolan said that it was very important the pope had said to him that when he comes to new york, he wanted to see an inner city catholic school. what kind of schools do you think that he is -- he is expecting to see here? >> well, when he was in buenos aires, he doubled the number of schools during his tenure. flush and he wants children who don't have an opportunity for a good education to get one. so i think that's what he's affirming here. that these -- look at the faces of the children. they're immigrant children. probably mostly first generation. and so he wants the catholic community to focus resources on helping these children. >> it's been a message of inclusion since he first landed in washington, d.c.. he's included everybody and every step of the way and this is just another outreaching event including the kids and this -- this visit that's just you know taken catholics and non-catholics alike. >> you know, we have an emerging hispanic majority in the catholic church. >> uh-huh. >> and yet, we don't have the vocations and we have to make

. >> he's very intrigued by the united states. >> reporter: cardinal dolan talked about his first extended meeting with francis in rome 6 months after the pope was elected. >> he said look, is it okay if we don't talk about business? can we talk about the united states? he literally got out of an atlas, a map of the united states, and he said take me through this. i started with new york. >> reporter: the u.s. has 70 million catholics, the fourth largest population in the world, and yet never in his life has francis visited. cardinal dolan said he believes the pope is arriving with a sense of desire to listen and learn. >> what a humble guy to admit i need help in understanding this country and an important part of the flock is the catholic family in the united states of america, and i need to get to know them. >> reporter: the flock is everied by the as anxious to greet their supreme pastorment this choir practices for its papal performance, and the cathedral is gleaming after the multiyear restoration, and a deep cleaning is underway. >> it may will be done before he arrives it

this is cardinal dolan at st. patrick's.mething else to show off as pope francis kisses one of the cross there is. he's showing off st. patrick's cathedral which just finished $175 million in renovation, a complete renovation that took some time. so cardinal dolan is a proud tour guide, if you will of the cathedral. it's something pope francis obviously wanted to see. ron, your thoughts about the day and the visit so far overall. >> i just want to say as a catholic, one of the high points of my life was meeting pope john paul when i was at the vatican with president bush. politically this wasn't a political speech. he is bringing a message that i think he's really focused on the youngest in this country. he's trying to create a church that's open to millennialses who are purpose-driven. very spiritual, but not ali ins churches. when he's talking about climate change, we hear it the way we do as baby boomers. they hear it as a pragmatic generation that looks at science for what it is and doesn't want to hear hot button issues

[laughter] >> i don't know. my wife said thinks i was. >> but did you want to take on -- it's a big undertaking. >> it's very exciting. this is a he is to havic thing -- historic thing for the city. i love to be able to help the city bring something like this to life. >> what has been the hardest part of getting ready for the visit? >> the fact that he's here for hours of available time. and to try to decide what he was going to do and how to expose him to as many people as possible has been a tremendous challenge. >> what about organizing all the various activities? i mean, who, you know, organizes the pre-papal mass, the mass, the v events at the world trade center? >> well, it takes an army. i've been lu
