after that, they carjacked a man who was in a black suv. they started driving, held him at gunpoint, eventually released that man. by now, the police are chasing them to watertown, massachusetts, which is another, say, four miles away from cambridge. so now we're eight miles from boston. and they get into a shootout with police. the car stops. one of the men, the men who was identified by the fbi as wearing the black hat at the news conference on thursday, the black hatted man who was seen in all the pictures at the bombing, the left of your screen there, he, authorities say, got out of the suv with explosives strapped to his chest. he was shot and killed by police. the other man, the white-hatted individual, drove on, eventually abandoned the car, and now they're searching for him. >> all right. pete williams live in washington for us. thanks so much for that information, pete. we'll check back in with you soon. i want to go now to michael isikoff, who's live in watertown, who's also been working his sources to find out the very latest on

we know the carjacking victim left his cell phone in the vehicle. that's how authorities were able to trace that stolen car to watertown where that final confrontation took place. we're getting more information on dzhokhar tsarnaev telling investigators -- the 19-years-old is unable the speak. i spoke to a s.w.a.t. team member who was one of the men who took him down off the boat, he thought it looked more like a stabbing wound, but it is not clear what kind of wounds he had to his throat. he communicates by writing and nodding. here the latest information we have. he claims in international terrorists groups were behind the attack. the radicalization happened from watching online videos. the motivation was to defend islam. all these claims are going to be verified by investigators or further investigated by law enforcement personnel. he says his older brother was the master mind. he's been charged in the deadly attacked. he's on a ventilator, but he's still communicating with investigators. tom, what do you make of what he's telling investigators?

shortly after that a carjacking happened in the cambridge area. then a massive shoot-out took place here in watertown. all of these somewhat connected on the same string of roads, but we don't know if all this activity is all connected to each individual event i just named or if any of it is connected to the boston marathon itself. we know the fbi joined into this investigation here in watertown to determine if there's a link between the two, and it certainly looks like by the increased activity we are seeing that there is more activity. jake? apparently we are going to be reporting on the activity. and from what i understand, we may be getting more information from the massachusetts state police spokesperson, although he has left this scene and gone back to his headquarters. perhaps just to assemble the information from all the agencies involved. there are as many as a dozen police agencies, maybe more involved in this activity. there's a lot of activity going on. there was, according to our witnesses, police actively going between houses trying

police reported reports of an armed carjacking and the victim was carjacked at gun poit with two males and kept in the car for approximately a half an hour and then the victim released at a gas station on memorial drive and cambridge. she was thought injured. the person was not injured. police began a search of the vehicle and we are told the explosive devices were being thrown from the car by the suspects and the suspects exchanged gunfire near dexter and laurel streets. that is about 275 yards or so down the street from where i am standing right now. an mbta officer was transported to the officer. we also had that information. during the pursuit somebody was trans -- transported to the hospital. a manhunt is underway right now. we also know as we have mentioned that the bomb squad is assessing and removing any potential explosive devices that may have been thrown into the street by the watertown suspects. we are waiting on further word, but that is the latest from the district attorney's office. bill, that's what we have. >> thank you, molly. appreciate that. mark ferman is still wit

>> a man wanted in a carjacking spree is under arrest this morning accused of abducting a driver at gunpoint and trying to do the same to another. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is right where it all started. >> it must have been terrifying starting right here in this shopping center, the 30-year-old jeffrey boyce is in custody. he was armed and they found rifles and several hundred bullets. here is what the police believe he did. first, an attack at 4:30 at the ups store. police say he ordered a man to drive him around. the man did. but they stopped and police say the suspect tried to move self rifles from his car to the victim's car and the victim was able to get away. at 6:51 police got a call about a man pointing an ak-47 at a woman's head and demanding her car. police say for some reason the suspect got spooked and ran away and officers say they caught him shortly after. his mother had called san francisco police saying she was worried about him and worried he would be checking into the russian cobs lat and described him as mentally ill. he now is in custody. no one is hurt. police s

a carjacking of a mercedes suv was reported as well in cambridge. police spotted that suv in watertown leading to a chase and a shootout. during the shootout, the man believed to be suspect number one with the black cap was shot and killed. one officer shot. he was injured. the suspect, number two, the one with the white cap, was able to get away and is still on the loose. the fbi just released a new photo of the suspect they are looking for. it was taken by surveillance cameras at the 7-eleven. pete williams says the suspects are brothers from russia and may have military experience. the one killed by police in a shootout has been identified as 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. the one on the run has been identified as 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. they have been in the country for at least ten years. >>> watertown is a suburb of boston, about 8 1/2 miles from the site of the bombings at copley square in boston and about six miles from the m.i.t. campus. the federal complaint tells the carjacking victim's story this way. a man approached and tapped on his passenger side window. when the victim rolled down the window, the man reached in, opened the door, and entered the victim's vehicle. the man pointed a firearm at the victim and stated did you hear about the boston explosion, and i did that. the man removed the magazine from his gun and showed the victim it had a bullet in it, then reinserted the magazine. the man then stated i am serious. the man with the gun forced the victim to drive to another location where they picked up a second man. the two men put something in the trunk of the victim's vehicle. the complaint goes on to describe how they stopped at an atm machine, attempting to withdraw money from the victim's account, they stopped at a gas station convenience store where according to the complaint the two men got out of the car at which point the victim managed to escape. the story of the rest of what happened that night was told to me yesterday by the chief of the police department that sto

this car pertains to a carjacking a few days ago in modesto. at this point there are no suspect in custody. gatt early this morning. the chp tells me officers observed the car making an erratic movement near division street. officers ran license plates at came back at the car involved in a carjacking in modesto. officers followed the car. that is when they say it took off down van ness going speeds up to 70 mi. for hour. at some point officers stopped chasing the vehicle because of the high speed. as they made their where it down bad as they found the car here it crashed into a fire hydrant. it crashed so violently the fire hydrant blew off. officials have taken the fire hydrant away. you can see the damage left behind. witnesses told police they think the suspect ran of union street. they set up a perimeter, searched, they did not find the suspect nor did have a suspect description. they know the car was involved in the carjacking. they do not know who they're looking for. the chp however, did tell me expect them to be armed and dangerous beca
