carl jackson is joining us with more on the debate last night. and i got to tell you carl, it was interesting the big elephant in the room was that donald trump wasn't there. did you feel like that was like a vacuum last night? >> reporter: well defense it it inly felt less exciting, no doubt about. >> amy: donald trump being in atmosphere. i got to tell you i think the debate became more substantive between the other candidates as a result of it. donald trump obviously i don't think it was a net gain or net loss for himself as a matter of fact, i just think donald trump is going to be donald trump. but i have to say that -- he'll miss skipping out on that debate wasn't about megyn kelly, it was strategy and we'll see whether or not it worked for him, quite >> amy: so the des moines register had a headline saying cruz struggled last night. struggling? >> reporter: i absolutely did. i love cruz. i think he's a great debater. you could see in the first hour almost seemed like he needed donald trump there to just kind of ping-pong off of if you will.
