i'm carlos watson.. soldiers killed and three others wounded when their vehicle hit a bomb in eastern afghanistan and taliban claiming responsibility for a separate attack. a suicide bomb targeting a nato convoy. seven civilians killed in that attack and 50 injured. all this happens two days before afghans head to the polls to pick their next president. i'm joined live from kabul, afghanistan, by nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel and also joined by jean chatzky, my divest guest co-host. richard, let me go to you first. where do things stand right now just some, i guess, 36 hours before the voting starts? >> tension has been raised significantly here in kabul after not only that suicide bombing attack that happened on the outskirts of the city today against the nato convoy, but also a rocket attack that landed not far from here on the presidential compound of president karzai. no injuries there. the taliban is promising more and more attacks. they are trying to keep as many people as the

carlos?richard, where do things go from here if, indeed, that kind of fraud is widely believed to have happened? we saw what happened in iran. a bloody standoff where ultimately protesters seem to have crushed by silence. what do we expect will happen here if there continue to be credible allegations of fraud? >> that is a major concern and u.s. officials have been telling all of the opposition candidates, in particular abdullah abdullah. he is the main contender. he has a large political organization and also has something of a guerrilla background coming from mostly in areas outside of kabul to the north, part of the northern alliance. the real concern he would reject the results and that his followers would turn violent. i spoke to abdullah abdullah this morning. he says he is not calling for any kind of street demonstrations. he is calling for restraint, but that if president karzai comes out and has an outlandish victory, a win by a great margin which opinion polls here said predicted wo

carlos?> richard, is there a sense there in afghanistan that this uptick in violence is to be expected to some extent, given the i crease in american troops? given the election which certainly engendered a good bit of heat and given there is really a competition now for land and power there? or are some saying, no, afghanistan is tipping toward chaos and, in fact, it is time to talk about exit strategies? >> a lot of questions in there, carlos. but the military had expected there to be an increase in violence in this period. partly because, as you said, more troops have been going into afghanistan, going into the south where british forces in the past had been there, but in relatively small numbers. not taking as aggressive as a posturing as u.s. soldiers and marines have been doing in places like kandahar. also the taliban simply have gotten better, better at using ieds and better at using complex attacks. generally what we've seen is a lot of ied attacks that are targeting the troops. they'
