[applause] >> thank you. i am pleased to be here with my colleagues at the board and others who are here as well. we are here to celebrate asian pacific american heritage month. this kicks off the celebrations we will be having an the recognitions we will be giving. i apologize first. i was at a budget meeting. sadly, that is coming before as quickly. i had to spend some time there. i guess it is true. asians are probably good at math. [laughter] i am just joking. there are many other things we are good at, as you can see from all the people who are here today. we have education leaders, our president of the board who runs a small business, many different levels of expertise. that is what i want to speak about. when we think about asian- americans, we fall into stereotypes. we have individuals in our community who are poor and rich, who have been here for a long time, who are new immigrants. each one of us has a strong place in creating the fabric of our country. i want to emphasize the fact that every indivi

please welcome president chiu, carmen chu, supervisor kim, and eric mar. wish you could see yourselves as we see you. we are chinese, japanese, and caribbean. we are south easton, southeast asian, and filipino. i want to thank the leaders in our community who are here with us tonight, leaders of our benevolent associations, our business associations, and our commissioners. we cannot do what we do in city hall without all of you. we know we have come a long way. it was not long ago that chinese americans were excluded under our city laws. when japanese americans were interned. when filipino tenants were evicted from the international hotel. when the fbi investigated our community. for us to stand here now is amazing. i think finally we have enough asian americans to form our own dragon dance team. it would be a short dragon, but a dragon dance team nonetheless. we would not be here and be able to do that but for the support we have and the work we are all doing together. thank you all for being here, and a very happy lunar new year. certainly board president david chiu for helping me co-host this and carmen chu and her work with us already started and will help guide us, along with board president david chiu on all of the hearings that the rest of the board will have. i want to thank each and every member of the board of supervisors as well. you've been weighing in and we've been creating a different dialogue on the front end to make sure that all of our constituents know what we're doing, more transparent, and ultimately where our values are. i also want a big shout-out and thanks to everybody in this room. there's a lot of department heads and commissions and labor representatives and representatives from our non-profits and community members as well. thank you for engaging us in this really dedicated six-month process. i want to go back to the very first neighborhood budget hearing that we held about almost six months ago. it was one where i was asked at the very beginning, what does the budget mean to you? and i wasn't the only one. there were several supervisors that were there, and we all said pretty much t

chiu. >> thank you. madam secretary. this is an item that was introduced a while back by supervisor carmen chu. and it is my pleasure to now hold this hearing today. let me begin by noting that the issue of a-g requirements is something that i know the board of supervisors and board of education in particular have been paying attention to. and it's been a very important issue at the school district. the purpose of this hearing today is to have a better understanding of our progress. and specifically our progress when it comes to closing the achievement gap. i know from my own experience, having worked at the school district, that the achievement gap has been something that the district has been tackling for many years. and even though we have a lot to be proud of, and we are the highest performing urban school district in the state of california and one of the top ones in the country, the fact is that our african-american kids are -- our latino kids, our english language learner kids, they're still not performing at the level that they need to. so we want to understand today how our kids are do

chiu, president of the board of supervisors. thank you for coming. the mayor does not come along. he has a policy. supervisor carmen chu is also with us. we are also lucky enough to have supervisor mark farrell as well. maybe he is having a pastry or something. there is a lot of traffic between here and city hall. that is a bad joke, i know. we also have supervisor eric mar here with us this morning. all the supervisors are sitting together. we are also lucky enough to have the chief of protocol for the city of san francisco charlotte schultz. last but not least, we have tony sun, chair of the asian arts commission. that's good started this morning. i am going to get off the stage and and things off over to jay hsu. he is going to tell us a little bit more about what we're doing today. >> someone needs to hand me the remote. terrific. brand implementation is a journey. the asian art museum embarks on a new journey. to reinvent ourselves, to engage a broad audience. the broad audience is very much at the core of what we do here and who we are. why now, you ask? as the aging world influence grows, so is understanding

carmen chu who is out here tonight. she is going to be the head of the budget committee -- committee. [laughter] that the supervisors have selected with david chiu's help. this is her third. i have committed to six. we are combining as many of the districts together as possible, so we're trying to do this as efficiently as possible. but we will do all six. we know, based on last year's turnout and i think tonight, the turnout as well, if we listen to closely, we go and do our homework, we will make good decisions so that hopefully you are not there the end of may screaming at us in the months of june saying we did not listen. we have got to listen early, and we have got to do -- got to make good decisions. we're ready to do that. i wanted to forewarn you that this is a two-year budget and is still bouncing a deficit. and guess what -- the news from the state and the news from the federal government is not improving. every time we looked around, there's something else of the governor says he has got to cut, because we head -- cannot figure out how to balance the state budget. if you notice, on every major decisions that they are making, they are ma

chiu and others -- misconduct because all four of them have broken the law. this case was there before the mirkarimi case. furthermore, there needs to be an investigation as to why why supervisor carmen chu got a crosswalk in her district, which she did not disclose. she did not recuse yourself from the vote on that project. that was clearly a conflict of interest. the people of park merced deserve to have their case proceed as tenaciously as this one because we are entitled to equal protection under the law. this case is going to court, and i will pursue it with every spirit in my body. i implore you to not succumb to political pressure and not be used. you are intelligent human beings, and thank you. [applause] >> hello, good afternoon. my name is -- i am here to support share of mirkarimi and his family. i came to san francisco because i believed the city is a city of diversity, a city of fairness, a city of fairness, but all i see is injustice and corruption. you guys should dismiss this charge and let the man continued doing his job. suspension without pay is unfair and cruel. he has got family and has to be able to pay. a whole thing is just a sham. it is politically motivated.
