francine: it links it back to what mark carney can do on interest rates.xit debate, how should investors around the world look at it? pound, andative for mark carney can probably not do anything until a referendum happens. is there a real risk that the u.k. leaves the e.u.? that would be insane. nicholas: i think it would be insane. i do not speak for everybody else on this. i have no party affiliation. but i think it would be very worrying. i hope that we get the referendum out of the debate soon so that the uncertainty can go away, and i would hope that the answer would be that we stay in. i think that is likely to happen the voice ofnk as business -- i come from academic life -- our research interactions, research funding are very much european. we depend enormously on the movement of people and goods and services. on trade, we negotiate together as europe, and we get much stronger as a result print on climate we negotiate together. if you look at security issues that you have been talking about, speaking as europe, you have a much stronger voice. franc

david: there are a lot of factors that are cutting both ways in mark carney's world. -- is going to be important for an economy like the u.k.. and also the political risk and the suggestion that they want the referendum to be earlier on are going to be in mind. but if you look at the data, there has been a slowdown in leading indicators. it is not clear that the domestic economy is where we want it to be for a rate hike. manufacturing, business confidence, confidence in pmi at waitrose as well, as it has slowed slightly in recent months. it certainly doesn't give you the idea that they are ready to go for rate hikes. francine: it was september and october that we were thinking we would wait until the hike. but now the hike has been pushed back to 2017? it is i'm not sure that deftly going to happen next year. things are falling into place. the fed rate hike was a big one. we don't know what the fed will do this year. i would be surprised if they move in the first quarter. i think they will wait until the second quarter. the may bank of england meeting in serious doubt. boldly less than
