you think usually this time 80 behind me near the carquinez bridge would be packed. that is not the case today as the bridge is closed while they do necessary construction and repaving of the road on the bridge as you approach the east bay and the city. take a look at the map. these are the detours you have to be mindful of heading into this holiday weekend. i-80 from 780 in vallejo to highway 4 in hercules. the east bound site is remaining open. the detour will take you down 780 on the 680, and then on the highway 4 before you end up back on interstate 80. you can also take 24. caltrans says the project is very necessary. they will be pouring 9000 pounds of concrete and completely refacing four lanes of traffic on the bridge. it is not the first time caltrans has shut down a bridge over labor day weekend. several times the bay bridge was closed after that was being built. they closed it several times to advance the project. this time around it is the carquinez bridge. some drivers are not happy. >> they should do it in the middle the night like they usually do, betwe

live on the carquinez bridge. amanda quintana, ktvu fox two news. pretty cool. da i could save that photo. that's a pretty cool photo there of you on the bridge. all right, chp motorcycle officer and another driver are being treated for serious injuries now after colliding in a san francisco intersection. witnesses say the chp officer was thrown from his motorcycle and onto the street at harrison and third streets yesterday afternoon. the driver of the car involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. we talked with the chp spokesperson who says first responders arrived on the scene very quickly. emergency personnel arrived on the scene within approximately 1 to 2 minutes of the traffic collision. the motor officer was transported to san francisco general hospital with parents non life threatening injuries. the driver of the car was also taken to san francisco general, but police did not release details about the person's injuries. there are surveillance cameras at that intersection, but no word yet on whether officers were able to look at a

you can't get onto the carquinez bridge because law enforcement is there, who just flashed their light at us. but caltrans says this section of westbound 80, kira, will be open by tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m., in time for the back-to-work commute after this long holiday weekend. on thursday night, caltrans shut down westbound 80 from 780 in vallejo across the carquinez to crockett, where i'm at, and into hercules. this is so workers can tear up the asphalt and repave the road in what amounts to a complete facelift of this section of westbound 80. caltrans says they are compressing more than 100 nights of work by doing this over the long holiday weekend. now, the general manager of the dead fish restaurant in crockett, which is a couple hundred yards from where i'm standing, this overlooks the carquinez bridge, is not happy about this weekend's closure. labor day is normally the third or fourth busiest weekend of the year, according to the gm. now he says it will be his worst since customers coming from the east are canceling or not showing up for reservations, to avoid the two and a h

this weekend is the first time that the carquinez bridge has been closed in its 20 year history. many of us know it as the carquinez bridge, but it's actually named the alfred zampa memorial bridge, named after an ironworker that worked on multiple bridges here in the bay area. he fell off the golden gate bridge and was in the hospital for 12 weeks. but he came back to continue his work. and it's fitting that this work here on the bridge wraps up on labor day. organized labor changed the course of history for my family, my grandfather getting in the ironworkers union men. he got good wages, good benefits. he retired on a union pension for 30 years. he retired at age 65 and lived to 95 on a union pension. the that was his grandson and it was pretty cool to see him out here this morning. he said this is the first time he's actually been able to walk on the bridge since it opened 20 years ago. so because the bridge is closed, caltrans was actually able to do some other work on the bridge as well. so they updated some lights. there was a fire here three years ago that took out some o

this is a big milestone for the westbound carquinez bridge. it has not been closed since the bridge opened 20 years ago. so the bridge actually got to take th day off. there was an extensive detour in place around the work and on saturday, traffic backups were not far behind. ridiculous just ridiculous traffic. i mean, armando is heading home to pittsburgh. normally it takes me about 35 minutes to get home from here. it's going to take me about an hour today. so that's a that's a pain in the butt. so this was the backup on the benicia bridge and check out this ride on westbound highway 37. it took us 20 minutes to go one mile. everywhere you go. so you can't go anywhere without getting into some kind of congestion. caltrans says it shows labor day weekend for the project because traditionally there's less traffic heading westbound. so if you can if you're driving back from sacramento sierra, take the benicia bridge or you can also take the richmond-san rafael bridge. but many drivers are happy the road is being repaved . cindy frazier says it's
