secretary of defense ash carter held talks with the saudi king. he's also visited israel and jordan. he's trying to ease fears over the nuclear deal reached with iran last week. let's go live to washington d.c. barely was the ink drying on that security council resolution about the iran deal than the u.s. was rushing to give assurances to its allies in the middle east june that's right because even as the deal with iran over its nuclear program was being negotiated, you pretty much had critics from all sides from the saudis and members of the gulf cooperation council to israel to republicans here in washington, all very, very skeptical that the deal that has been reached in the past couple of weeks could actually prevent iran from developing nuclear weapons and two could also prevent it from somehow expanding its influence across the greater middle east. part of that ash carter, the defense secretary is trying to do is reassure leaders that iran is still very problematic at least as far as official washington is concerned. washington is concerned

breaking this morning, secretary carter touching down in baghdad. that visit unannounced. let's get the latest from jomana karadsheh live from jordan. what is the secretary doing in iraq? >> reporter: christine, one would assume the focus of the visit is the fight against isis while most of the middle east tour has been meeting with allies and trying to reassure them about the u.s. commitment to the allies. whether jordan israel or saudi arabia when it comes to the iran deal. in iraq he is scheduled today to meet with iraqi leaders, including haider al abadi, the minister of defense and the sunni leadership in the country. he is expected to meet with u.s. forces there. as you know, more than 3,000 u.s. troops in the country as trainers and advisers overseeing that fight against isis. we would expect secretary carter to be discussing the latest when it comes to the battle on the ground there led by the iraqis supported by the coalition, air strikes and fighters against isis in iraq. christine, we expect iraqi leaders to voice what we heard them say in the past. they want mo

we earlier heard from ash carter who says the deal will keep iran from getting a nuclear bomb. >> on iran this new deal when implemented will place significant limitations on iran that will effectively cut off its pathways to the fissile material for a nuclear bomb. but it's also important to note that it places no limitations -- let me repeat that -- no limitations on what the department of defense can and will do to pursue our defense strategy in the region. >> i want to go back out to capitol hill and our libby casey, who has been listening to these hearings. libby, i understand that the white house has embarked on a pretty active crusade to try to convince key democrats that this is a good deal. what have they been doing to that effect? >> we will see house democrats go to the white house this afternoon, stephanie. they are also doing a lot of outreach, though sending teams to capitol hill trying to have conversations. president obama even golfing with house democrats. house democrats are crucial to the white house strategy because it is expected that the house and senate do pass

i want to go back to what you said about the malign activities that i believe secretary carter said he has no reason to believe will change. the iran network, the cyber terrorism, the weapon's trafficicing, we could get into all of the other things they are guilty of we can get into the ayatollah sending a tweet out. these people are evil people. and they are going to continue to expand in areas they think they can. they have violated 27 international treaties. they have violated some of the terms of the non-proliferation treaty. so they are dangerous. i understand why you would be concerned with the nuclear threat. so my question is if this deal goes through, what does our posture look like in the middle east and with our partners over the next two years? what looks measurably different to make shoes feel like we're in a position to make it untenable for the iranian leadership to move forward with a nuclear weapon. >> i want to highlight when we talk about iran -- it's really the regime -- >> there's no doubt about it. >> it's not the iranian people. the iranian people there's some re
