back to president carter. he had and still has at the age of soon to be 93, the most amazing man i've ever known, actually. he has the ability to absorb, as chris said, and assimilate and organize and reduce to essential points enormous amounts of information. that is both a blessing and a curse. it's a blessing for the obvious ropes. it's a curse because if somebody doesn't protect him, he is going to be getting too much information, too much of the time, and what i was doing with president carter, it went in cycles. he would come to me, we'd give him too much and he would say, jack, you got to cut back. i was up until midnight last night reading stuff. i'd cut it back. three days later he'd say issue didn't get enough on this. you didn't give me enough on this. one thing that people learned -- did not take them long to learn it in the carter administration -- is that if you are going to have a meeting with the president, you better come prepared because he is going to be likely the most prepared person in th

one of the remarkable things about president carter which was a remarkable thing about governor carter too is that he would repeatedly say don't come to me and water down the recommendation of what needs to be done, what ought to be done, because you are factoring in all the political aspects of it. don't do that. i want to know what is the best solution to the problem, what is the best answer to the question, what is the best path to take on the merits. we will worry about the politics later. that too is an admirable trait. it is what you want your presidents to be like and how you want them to think. but again you have to protect the president against himself sometimes because there are some things that had such brave, in some cases dire, political consequences that no matter how worthy the goal was or the objective you ought not to do it now. there was always that tension with president carter perfect example is panama canal. every president knew and recognized we need do something about the panama canal. we need to give it back. he took it from them, violated their sovereignty and

this is a favorite exhibit of mine from the carter library. this it was not in the original carter library, so this exhibit resulted from a renovation done in 2009, which was 13 years after the library opened, and one of the large changes in the new exhibited was a very expanded exhibit of carter's early years iss syears, and as from the heading on the side there, this exhibit really focused on the african-americans in his community who were extremely influential in the early years. not only did it do that in passing, but shared and named the people and really emphasize ed carter's -- what -- the advantages he gained from this intimacy from people who were different from him. this is not a display, but this is the outside of the clinton library. the clinton library was consciously model after the slogan of his re-election campaign, which was a bridge to the 21st century, and as you can a little tell here, the building looks like a bridge, and most importantly, it looks like an unfinished bridge with the end arking out of the arkansas river, an
